in latin class, we recently gave projects on the gods, and my friend was dionysis, and as he put it, "i'm not very well known, because that no good homer didn't mention me much, and when he did, he made me seem hostile!" is it true the dionysis is portrayed hostilely in homer?

I don't remember Dionysus in Homer...hmm...

Upon searching the Iliad and Odyssey, I came up with the following results:

No results for 'Dionysus'.
No results for 'Iaccho'.

Two results in each for 'Bacchus'.
One in the Iliad was just a passing reference; the other rang a bell, and may be what was referred to:

He it was that drove the

nursing women who were in charge of frenzied Bacchus through the

land of Nysa, and they flung their thyrsi on the ground as

murderous Lycurgus beat them with his oxgoad. Bacchus himself

plunged terror-stricken into the sea, and Thetis took him to her

bosom to comfort him, for he was scared by the fury with which

the man reviled him.

A reference from the Odyssey:

Then I saw Phaedra, and Procris, and fair Ariadne daughter of the magician Minos, whom Theseus was carrying off from Crete to Athens, but he did not enjoy her, for before he could do so Diana killed her in the island of Dia on account of what Bacchus had said against her.

The other is also just in passing. So, I wouldn't say your friend gave a fair assessment of Homer's portrayal of Dionysus.

*bump-age*

I'm a huge fan of mythology... however, I'm a bit picky with what I like.

I enjoy Greek and Egyptian in particular. Romans were cheaters and simply cloned the Greek Pantheon and put different names on them. What angers me the most is that the Roman names are more well-known than the Greeks.

Favorite gods... for Greece, it has to be Pallas Athene and Hephaestus. Athena is the goddess of wisdom and (what I thought to be) defensive war. Hephaestus is the smithy god. Hephy was never really appreciated and was a social outcast amongst the Olympians. For Egypt, hands down, it's the good old ibis -- Thoth, he who does many things and yet is not well known.

*revives the thread*
