Legolas would give his life without hesitation to save Gimli, and Gimli would do the same for Legolas.

So you (as in people who already said yes) are saying that you would definately give your life for your best friend.

Human nature is too complex to have a definate response to this question until you find yourself in the situation - and then it's too late!

However, dwarven or elven nature could be different. If we went to Middle-earth and met Legolas and Gimli in person, then we could know the true depth of their friendship.

I'm just making assumptions when I say they'd give their lives for each other, I don't really know squat!

I think even the Valar liked the Friendship of Gimli and Legolas because they let Legolas take Gimli with him to the undying lands.
It was kind of a symbol for the longlasting friendship between elves and dwarves.

I believe their enmity is more long-standing than their friendship. But anyway, it doesn't say that he definitely went to Valinor, it says that it is said that Legolas took him, I think. But I personally prefer to think he did.

Took him where, then?

Sorry, poorly worded. It says that "it is said" that Legolas took Gimli to Valinor, I believe, as opposed to just saying that he took him to Valinor. At any rate, this Halfwitted Apprentice Loremaster got the last sentence right!

That was a question I have been asking for months. Do Gandalf, Galadriel and Elrond go back to Valinor? And what about Sam and Frodo: where do they go? Maybe to the same place like Legolas and Gimli?

I've seen discussion of this on various other threads: IIRC, the consensus seemed to be that Gimli, Sam and Frodo live out their (mortal) lives on Tol Eressea, as you said. Presumably Gandalf (the Maia), Elrond and Galadriel would return to Valinor.

I agree about Frodo, Sam and Gimli, and Gandalf, but I think Elrond and Galadriel had to spend some time in Tol Eressea first, before proceding to Valinor. They had spent a long time in Middle-Earth and were 'stained', and needed a sort of healing or strengthening.

So do you think that Frodo, Sam and Gimli diedk? Would be possible because the Undying lands don't make mortals immortal.

I think that mortals aren't allowed on the Undying Lands full stop (after Earendil). However, in Tol Eressea, they can have their ring-related hurts healed before they shuffle off their mortal coils.

I'm not sure, but I think that the Teleri who came late to the West lived on Tol Eressea, too. That would include Legolas, but Galadriel and Elrond were Noldorin descent so eventually went back to the "mainland".

Was Elrond really a Noldorin?

He was of Noldorin descent; Idril was Noldorin, I think; but Elwe was Sindarin, so he would have the blood of Sindar and Noldor. In fact, I think there's also a bit of Vanya mixed in, but not sure.

His great-great-great-grandmother on his father's side was Indis of the Vanyar. And do not forget his great-great-grandmother on his mother's side, Melian the Maia. (Phew - do I get the great-great-numbers right..?)

Side note, Sam stays in the Shire after saying goodbye to Frodo.

Yes, but when Rosie dies he follows Frodo over sea.

And one of his relatives is in the sky. Funny thing.

I thought that was very sad because Sam leaves his children back in Middle-earth.
