I thought Galadriel was allowed to go back to Valinor long time ago, but she did not want to.

And about the strange Mirkwood elves in the hobbit.
I think it was only natural that they captured the hobbits in those times. I mean Mirkwood was not really a save place and it was a good action to be suspicious against everybody.
But unfortunately in the hobbit they caught the wrong ones.

Now there, I think that she was forbidden from going back longer, because she was a leader of the Exiles.

I agree...Galadriel was the last of the Noldorin Exiles and technically, the leader. She was alowed to go back in the end because she resisted the Ring.

I don't think anyone save Tom Bombadil is actually not tempted by the Ring, but Elrond is wise, so he knew the only thing to do was destroy the Ring.

Galadriel is also wise and saw the temptation for what it was.

Legolas was probably tempted too, but he didn't say anything about this. It wouldn't be helpful to say you were tempted when Boromir was already making it obvious he was tempted.

And Gimli must have been tempted too, especially since he loves jewellery and precious metals. But he didn't say anyting either, because he also resisted the temptation that he must have faced.

I think I have to re-read the part of Galadriel and Celeborn in the Unfinished tales.

The discussion about Galadriel is pretty compelx...
I think Tolkien in the beginning meant that she was forbidden to travel to Aman, but later on changed his mind (this, I think, is in UT)

I just read that again in the books, that Galadriel actually was allowed to go back long before the war of the ring, but she didn't want to. I think she was kind of too proud.

Yes, that was probably Tolkien's latter idea. The first idea (the one in LotR) was that she wasn't permitted entrance to Aman (this is seen in the song Namarië)...

(I think )

Off topic, but don't be freaked out by Frodo and Sam ! They have the kind of friendship that we can't understand in today's society.

Even though, I don't think we can truly understand Legolas and Gimli's friendship either. They would do anything for each other. Can any of us say we would do anything for a friend?

Treebeard Re: Galadriel, & Frodo & Samwise

Hi, about all the confusion re Galadriel, I think Tolkien had at least one change of mind. In LOTR she saw forbidden to return as leader of the exiles, in Unfinished Tales she is allowed to return and chooses to stay to be the Lady of Lothlorien [plus he had her marriage a few different ways too...] She was not without ambition to lead.
And re Legolas & Gimli, Frodo & Samwise, those very close and intense friendships were a big part of Tolkien's life at school and Oxford, right? And the Inklings...anyone read Charles Williams???

I liked the friendship between Sam and Frodo, it seemed so pure and sweet. But I always thought it was strange, that still in the end Sam called Frodo his boss, although they are the best friends now.
And I think that people who only see the movie or read only certain parts of the book could think that Sam and Frodo are gay.

I would do, but not for the friends I have now. but I certainly would do anything for my mother or my sister and maybe in future for my friends.
But yeah, the idea of such different personaliteis beeing the best friends seems rather strange to us.
