Driving

I will be 15 in a month, and eligible to get my Learner's Permit. I don't know if I want it! I'm terrified of driving. And recently it seems like there have been more driving accidents than ever! My brother and I got in a wreck, no one was hurt but he totaled his truck. Also yesterday a high school student was killed in the parking lot after school. She tripped, and fell into oncoming traffic and another student hit her. Another guy at my school is in a coma from a wreck. And anothor guy that graduated from my school last year just died in a car accident. That may not seem like a lot, but it is to me since I live in a fairly small town.

Anyway, were/are any of you guys scared to start driving? Any advice?

Sounds like a lot to me. It also sounds like your school should have a driving class.
I'll be 15 in October,i've already started reading the driver manual. it's a lot bigger than it used to be. I'm kinda scared to start driving too. One of my brothers was in a pretty bad car wreck last year, and one of my sisters has been in a couple of wrecks. i seem to share more genes with them than with my other brother and sister,so i have a feeling i might not be a good driver.
I guess i can't really give you any advice though.

I wasn't planning on learning how til I got back to America. But my mom really doesn't like driving much, and my brother and I decided to learn now before we leave. We're gonna be starting next month.

Good advice given to me: drive defensively and never assume that the people around you really know what their doing. As mean as that may sound its true. People around here keep their turn signals on for blocks, I cant tell you how many times I almost pulled out infront of some jerk I thought was gonna turn but who ended up gong straight instead .
So yeah, keep a clear head, and when your first starting, when in doubt...go slow. Who cares what other people think, take your time!

O yeah, one thing very important for a good driver to have a handle of: THE LIMITS OF YOUR VEHICLE.

So when you start just ram on the gas........and push the brakes 5 yards from the nearest obstacle.

ANd within no time you should see your fears recedinf away.

Don't drive drunk; that's so stupid and selfish.

I've been driving for a year now, and I was really nervous and scared at first, but after I got more comfortable behind the wheel I began to relax more. I like driving now, and I drive just about every day (to school, etc). The more practice you have, the more confidence you'll gain. But if you really don't feel ready, then just wait for a while -don't feel pressured to start right away! Good luck!

You should definitely learn to drive. Make sure you have a patient and experienced instructor, take it slow and you'll get the hang of it!

I didn't want to learn to drive, but now, 24 years later, I can't imagine not having a license. You can go where you want, when you want, and most importantly, LEAVE WHEN YOU WANT!

Yes, seatbelts can kill but hitting the windscreen at 80mph and the usual impact on the road and then skidding 200ft along the tarmac usually definitely kills

I enjoy driving my car....tho' it is a bit boring after having motorbikes

Learning to drive was easy enough, much like everything else in life, it just takes a little practice

)Learn to drive standard! It's way more fun than automatic.

Just assume everyone's an idiot (the YD approach in a nutshell )

I went through driver's ed last August, and I still have my permit. My license should be coming soon, I hope. Driving was really scary at first, but it's something you get used to with time and practice. Lots and lots of practice. My mom drives me nuts when she's in the car with me. My name just wasn't meant to be shrieked at that decible.
But you'll be fine. Drive defensively, and always wait for the arrow on a left hand turn.

my advice: When your mother yells 'STOP!' don't turn to her and ask why, just stop! No, I'm a pretty good driver, but I wish I had a better sense of direction I usually make sure that I have a navagator along, simply because I get all turned around when I'm driving in unfamiliar places.

But sense of direction or not, learn to parallel park! It'll do you a world of good when you're looking for a parking spot in, say, downtown Vancouver. I'll always be grateful for that skill.

Is there any other way to drive???

As Tolkien (a notoriously bad driver) use to say-

"Charge 'em and they'll scatter!!"

EDIT: Probably best to wait until after you've secured your licence tho'

I was scared to learn how to drive too. I finally got my permit last year and I'm going to get my licence next week. It is not sacry at all anymore. Take it slow, get lots of practice and drive defensively and you'll do great. But don't feel pressured into getting your permit. I didn't get my permit until I was ready. And it helps to have a relaxed person in the car with you. My mom used to freak out and scare me to death even if say a car drove past me. It did not help my confidence level
