It was something of Galadriel that Gimli could take with him. Maybe a little weird but it makes sense.

Gimli had previously distrusted Galadriel. When he found how beautiful and wise she really was, he was awed by her prescence. He wanted a little piece of what he considered the most beautiful creature in Middle Earth.

I think it also repesents the change that happens to people on a journey. Dwarfs are supposed to be very materialistic. For Gimli to want something of no intrinsic value shows that he has been changed by his experience at Lorien. Dwarfs and Elves are sometimes at odds, so all the more touching that a special relationship should develop between Galadriel and Gimli.

Plus galadriel's hair was the most beautiful of everybody(except perhaps Lutien Tinuviel-debatable), the inspiration for Feanor creating the Silmarils(besides the Two Trees-again, debatable)

If I were in Gimli's situation, I would ask for a lock of her hair.

"unless it is permitted to ask, nay, to name a single strand of your hair, which surpassess the gold of the earth as the stars surpass the gems of the mine."

Well obviously he though incredibly beautiful as he is saying it is better than the gems of the mine and several times throughout the books he mentions that the gems are incredibly awe inspiring. And Galadriel did command him to ask so why not take the oppurtunity?!

this is why..becuz it says in her hair was the mingling of the light of the Two Trees..galadriels hair inspired fëanor to create the silmarils..that explains how surprised the elves were when they heard his request of galadriel's hair..

Yeah, she refused to give any to Fëanor, one of the Noldor, and now she gives it to Gimli, a dwarf. I'd be surprised. I was surprised.

I wasn't. Galadriel is smart elf. She doesn't care if who that ask for her hair is elf or not she care if he's nice or evil.

We kind of have to look at the characters here:
Gimli's down to earth, doesn't really flaunt his wealth, he's humble(for a dwarf), steadfast and honest. A good dwarf. He asked his request out of REMEMBRANCE of Gladriel and out of awe and RESPECT for her, the lock of hair would become an HEIRLOOM of his house and THAT shows he would treasure it above EVERYTHING out of REMEBRANCE and DEVOTION to her. A truely WORTHY gift to give to a WORTHY dwarf. And Galadriel KNEW that he would respect it and basically DIE to keep her name from being slandared, so because she realized that he meant what he said she gave it to him.
FEANOR on the other hand struck me as a kind of jerk with a bad additude. I dont CARE if Melkor corrupted his heart an' everythin' he was still a jerk. I didn't like him. He seemed proud, haughty, disdainful and kind of a...jerk. Would he have revered and respected her hair if Galadriel had given it to him? He'd probably go showing it off and flaunting it and go on bragging on about how HE Feanor had won a lock of hair from Galadriel the queen of Lothlorien, unlike Gimli who doesn't mention her hair ONCE outside of Lothlorien if I remember rightly, he does protect her name from slander by Eomer and spoke only good of her. A wonderful gift for a worthy dwarf who deserved it because he was sincere about it.
Anywho that's the way I think about it.

Well Galadriel wasn't queen of Lorien or even a queen when Feanor asked for some hair but I see what you're saying.

I heard that the dwarves were starting to experiment with cloning.

As some others have indicated - I feel the reason Galadriel ended up granting his wish is because of his sincerity. In terms of wanting the strand of hair in the first place - he wanted to have a piece of her (more than some material item) so he could have something to always remind him of her kindness and beauty.

it says galadriel looked into the mind and heart of feanor and saw his thoughts..galadriel fought against feanor's rebellion at alaquande(thishappened after feanor asked for a tress of galadriels hair)..they were ever rivals...
galadriel sensed the evil of feanor..that is why in my opinion she didnt give him her hair..

Wait, wouldn't the ELVES invent cloning? I mean it has to do with biology, and biology is the study of living things so I think it'd be the ELVES who'd invent cloning because they're so...so...so...so...bioligical or whatnot.
