origin of orcs

erm...sorry this might seem really stupid but i was just wondering where the orcs/goblins came from? how do they multiply? i've read the hobbit and all 3 lotr books and i don't seem to remember reading where they come from. in the movie, it looked to me like they were being cloned.

When the Valar first came to lead the Elves out of Middle Earth to Valinor, some of them were afraid and ran away. They ended up in Melkor's hands, and he tortured and twisted them into Orcs. The story is in The Silmarillion.

FrodoFriend summed it up there... The Sil does not tell exactly what happened to the elves taken into (whatever Melkor's place was called). It is left as a slight mystery.

It's not even that clear cut. Late in his life Tolkien decided the Orcs were made from Men, not Elves, so go figure.

At the end of his life he drastically changed the mythology, so much so that it would be unrecognizable from that of the Silmarillion. I haven't seriously read Morgoth's Ring and the War of the Jewels but its all there.

Yeah, the new mythological idea found in Morgoth's Ring was made by Tolkien because he thought his old one too primitive and 'absurd'. It had to be believable. The new one is more in accord with science. The Earth rotates around the Sun, which existed before it, and so on. It actually wasn't just at the end of Tolkien's life. Tar-Elenion pointed this out to me. Read Gimli's song about Durin in Mória. The Moon suspiciously exists when Durin the Deathless first awoke in what is known in the published Silmarillion as the Ages of Starlight. And there's scientific Middle-earth writings written in the 50s.

Of course, anyone who seriously thinks about it will come to the conclusion that much of what passes for science is absurd.

in the silmarillion it hints that some of the elves might have fallen into the hands of morgoth and he corrupted them..
it could have been also they were just his own creations of his malice...this is very similar where in the silmarillion it says the history of sauron is unclear and he could have been an elf..
although in other books it clearly states he was a Maiar of Aule

I just got to the part in the silmarillion where it tells about him having some spies amoung the Elves. I haven't gotten to the part where it talks about them being corrupted. and if they came from elves, why are they not able to stand the sun??? I might have read that part but I'm not sure since I was in school at the time.
Only 7 more weeks until summer Vacation!!!!!!!!!

I think the idea is --whatever their origin -- the Orcs were 'made' in total darkness away from not only the Sun but probably the stars as well. And Melkor himself at least feared the Day-Star.

I always thought that orcs came from elves, but were twisted and mutilated. I don't know where i got the idea from but i didn't think that they were from man origin.

Tolkien was ambiguous on that... he first said they came from elves, and later changed his mind and had them coming from men.

I don't. Dylan might.

I think that the most likely explaination is that they were a product of both, but twisted enough to be unrecognizeable.
