However I do hate the word y'all....

And as he stepped down from the doors the swans did him reverence, and plucking each a great feather from their wings they proffered them to him, laying their long necks upon the stone before his feet; and he took the seven feathers and set them in the crest of his helm, and straightway the swans arose and flew north in the sunset, and Tuor saw them no more.' -Of Tuor and his Coming to Gondolin

It's more of an 'a' sound in the middle of that word. Again, that's a term that I generally only hear with older people.

How about the use of "fixin' to" instead of "about to"? "I'm fixin' to go watch TV" as opposed to "I'm about to go watch TV". Anyone else use that one?
*desperately* but there is no "R" in Washington!
haha, I have a friend who was raised in Texas, and she says "I'm fixin' to" all the time.
The other one she says is "Right quick" or "right fast"
eg. "I'm just gonna put my shoes on right fast."

I have a plain Wisconsin accent. Yeps...no special words, just fast, long run-on sentences. But there is one difference. We in Wisconsin say our state name correctly. Allow me to demonstrate-

Wi-scahn-sin.

NOT Whits-cone-sin.(I HATE IT when news reporters say that!)
I went to Toronto with my church for a service project, and someone asked where we were from, and the whole youth group responded "Wi-scahn-sin" She asked us to repeat it...we did. She said "Aw...don't they have cute little accents." I was a little embarrased, but I felt like saying, "Uh uh! WE don't have accents; YOU do, silly!"

So yes. I do have an accent. A "cute-fast-ah- instead-of-oh-sounding one." I would LOVE to be foreign...I love Irish accents, Scottish accents, some French accents...almost everything. Oh yes. I thought Canadian accents were the most fun things ever to listen to.

It's y'all, not ya'll.

Born and raised in Iowa, I have a 'non-accent'. The midwest accent, particularly Iowa, is what most national news broadcasters speak in, because we generally don't have any strange sounding words. The biggest thing Iowans have to an accent is putting "at" at the end of sentences when we don't need to.

Where's my coat at?

I got told off in high school for imitating my southern colonial teacher. I didn't know she didn't say "fixin" I just thought they all did. So what ended up happening I had to right "fixin' is not proper english" 200 times for homework. not bad i cheated *photocopier*

Actually, Starr Polish, we midwesterners DO speak with an accent; the language came from England, so the way the British pronounce it would be accurate. It just doesn't like we do.
