I don't really know. I can tell that there is a difference, but I wouldn't be able to pinpoint which is which.

I have that good ol' Chicago accent lol. the is da, for is fur and, well at least in my family, we speak fast. But nowadays many countries, states, whatever speak fast its just the generation in my opinion. I'm not too fond of accents, because I can never understand someone with a different accent. No matter how close it is to my own! lol But I have always found the Irish accent to be somewhat interesting, its also the hardest one for me to mimick. I could never be in a movie where I had to do an Irish accent!

I can understand Americans fine because we get so much of their TV. The converse is not necessarily true.

That would be trousers.

Pants are the undergarments worn around the nether regions to keep your turkey giblets under control.

Hahah, really? We refer to trousers as pants. Undergarments are..undergarments. Or underwear/undies/jocks/knickers, that kinda thing.

So if I said 'I like your pants' you'd be like o.O

We use pants and trousers interchangeably. Underpants/briefs/jocks or boxers are your pants, I suppose.

Pants: knacks, keks, trolleys, undercrackers, Ys (from Y-fronts), fairy hammock, scanties (my favourite)

Trousers: troos, strides, breeks (my favourite)

e.g. "Ma breeks are hummin' coz ah dinnae wear ony scanties."

:P

Oh I like your accent! It sounds very British to me, apart from a few sounds (but I could just be making them up in an effort to find some differences between your accent and a British one :P). Thank you for that. More please, if you don't mind.

Does anyone else have a mic? I think it'd be fun if we could perhaps record the same passage in our different accents, and post them here. I'll record something, just tell me what. I know a site where you can store large files (and download them rapidly) but the file is only stored for 7 days. Anyone else know a place that would host the files if we recorded some?

And Linaewen, how could I get a recording on the Moot?

Thanks. I'm not sure how you can see similarities between mine and British accents, as I can spot a brit a mile a way from his/her accent, and I honestly don't think I sound like them!

What I'll do is record a blog entry that I posted last night. I will only be able to put it up on the net tomorrow some time, since my phone syncstation is at home (and I use my phone to record my voice).

You can try: ftp://ftp.uunet.co.za/pub/incoming/ . It helps to have an FTP application through which you'd login anonymously, create folders and paste whatever you'd want to. There is also a 7-day "time-to-live" at that site. As you can see, that's where I uploaded my clip. I've uploaded files there, close on 100MB before; the host is stable, but will never serve as more than temporary storage.

Thank you, it's great!

Ok, in that one you sounded more like the teacher from SA that I was talking about before. Though it still sounds largely British.

PS: Kudos to you, Andúril! What a horrible time you're going through. I hope things get better soon

Lenya, that's what I was talking about before. I think I'll upload a recording once I make one and provide the link from www.yousendit.com.

Anyone else willing to do a recording?

Well well. It seems that the ole local accent is a popular one!

Just to throw it out there, I'm not an un attractive fellow, to be sure, but neither am I Colin Farrel, all dashing and swearing my arse off. But, to credit, my esteemed countryman and myself do indeed share one sure fire way to get the fair ladies swooning...

THE ACCENT BABY!

All you gotta do in the US or Australia is just speal of a few choice phrases or words and you'll be the belle of the ball...er..bar.

And if you particularly hamm it up, and use old phrases like "top o the mornin' ta ya", or "May the road rise to meet you...", which we Irish very seldom use, by the by, your in for a good night.

Come on now ladies, admit it. you all think us natives of Eire are charming and funny, (though however, we are neither, but rather drunk and annoying, Ireland's best kept secret...) and who wouldn't have a crack at Ole Col Farrel should the opportunity arise?

Oh, and top o the mornin' ta ya all.
