Mayo Shin Do karate. Sorry, forgot that bit! One of the guys doing the grading is coach to the British team, and also trained my instructor, so no pressure there...

Thank you. That's good because I've seen places around here for Akido. Anglorfin calls it "boring" and it should be combined with other styles, but I don't think that's bad at all. Do you take it, and/or any others?

I just knew it.

Take which ever kind of martial art you're comfortable or interest is piqued in. Unless you're living in Japan there is probably no more than one kind of Aikido school around. Try it, you may like it. Trying should always be an option offered by any school owner.

Ah, I've always wanted to try Aikido. Then I could actually fight someone without worrying of causing them serious injure such as the kicking and punching arts do...

What ??????

Was that a reference to my post?

If so, I was only giving him some info on the art. It was YOU who suggested the art of aikido.

YOU said "Based upon your information, Akido without question"

So, I am supporting YOUR suggestion for him to look into the art.

I can see if I said aikido is bunk or if tried to gainsay you in anyway, but damn I AGREE with you and I just offer an aikido link for him to look into so he can get some more knowledge about that art.

What is your gripe man? I can't even agree with you.

What's the deal? What gives?

It seems that since you misread that ninja fiasco that you TEND to take an antagonist tone towards my posts.

This one is just mind boggling. I agree with you, I try to help the kid with some info and you make the " I just knew it" statement.

What did you know? I was gonna concur with you? That I was gonna post an information link?

What 's eating at you? Are you still upset about tha ninja fiasco?

I have even made concillatory gestures to you when it was you who was in error.

{in Capt Kirk voice}

Spock are you outta your Vulcan mind?

Seriously, what is it?

Bombadillo,

It was my pleasure. I wish you luck.

Spock,

I recall something you said ages ago about yourself and I totally agree.

I will keep that in mind.

Indeed we can agree when one of us is out of our mind.

Serioulsy though, we do agree on basic principles if we do differ on precepts.

I took Tae Kwon Do, when I was in college from a Korean. He was great, but the class had all ages in it. The instructor didn't take any crap, if the little kids messed around he'd tell the parents that he was not a baby sitter and that they'd have to take him/her someplace else. (I really respected that.)

To go up in belts, you have to spar with a partner that the instructors choose. There were only two women in my age group and I was one of them. So, we had sparred in practice together before the meet, and I knew and had remembered all her moves when we were told we had to spar at the meet against each other. I was also sneaky. I would attack forward very quickly, backing her up. Then I'd step on her foot and hit her in the face. Not nice, but hey, what can i say.

I took a style RaKu Kai for 8 years. It was mostly self-defense but it wasn't one of those karate schools were you get a belt every month . If you trained hard you would most likely raise a belt once a year. I can still remember one of the things we had to say before each class started. "Honor, loyalty, truth, respect and self-control."

Two things I will say: (a miracle says A.E. ).

One, the point about stressing self defense and maybe a belt a year shows dedication for the arts sake and not for ego's sake.
Second the credo said at the beginning of the class shows integrity of the instructor. You had a good start. I hope you may find similar guides in other areas of your life.

Wow, a thread revived from July 2003-what a record.

Stay limber for that art. Billy Jack (the movie) features that art. You've got to have a bit of room and boo kou flexibility. Good luck on your classes.

Nice bump Boppy. I've never done Hapkido but I think all martial arts are awesome. Tell us what your classes are like!

Spock - I used to do Taekwondo, so I have a fair idea the degree of flexibility needed to do this (can still do the splits, so hopefully, no worries there). This intrigued me because I wanted to do something like Aikido (e.g circular motion stuff), but still keep some degree of offensive/kick stuff as well, so it sounds perfect. I might pop along on Thursday to check out the classes.

BOP, more power to you. There are very few people who can keep up with either art as they get older, due to stiffness and/or injury. Usually the ones I've seen are the teachers
