A moral of the whole (after the primary symbolism of the Ring, as the will to mere power, seeking to make itself objective by physical force and mechanism, and so also inevitably by lies) is the obvious one that without the high and noble the simple and vulgar is utterly mean; and without the simple and ordinary the noble and heroic is meaningless." Letters of JRR Tolkien, page 160.

Does anyone know what her alias Dernhelm means?

She was kown as dernhelm because of her exclaimation when she realized that the rider's headgear was heavy and obscured her sight.

'Dern Helm"

I am probably all wet here....but I seem to remember reading somewhere in the Sil that when an elf died, another was born....so you had a pretty constant population. Or did I just imagine I read that?

I don't recall reading that, but I could be mistaken. In Morgoth's Ring, Laws and Customes of the Eldar, it says that Elves centered a great deal around family, but they did not produce large numbers. Feanor had more children than any other, having 7 sons. It also says in the Athrabeth that Elves did not wed or bare children in time of war.

Well... I remember reading or hearing somewhere that after elves die and go to the halls of Mandos they can be REBORN (i.e. Glorfindel). That would lead to a lot of recirculation of elf spirits, and a whole lot more inbreeding if you have to be careful to avoid your relatives of your past lives as well as those of your present.

Hmmmmm...............
