I believe tolkien specefied somewhere that elves aged in stages, and that only in the third stage did they grow beards.

i'm not sure though.

Why did they grow beards in the third age? and why not all of them, just Cirdan? Maybe it because he is the oldest in MM now... is he?

Not age, stage.

Something like Child, Adult, etc.

I'm not sure, and it might have been something I just heard secondhand, but I believe that only after they reached a certain age did elves grow beards.

Wayfarer, the info. you're referring to came hither via Tar-Elenion, who read something in an article of Vinyar Tengwar. J. R. R. Tolkien said that Elves only grew beards when they reached their "third cycle of life". No one, here or in the Vinyar Tengwar staff, knows what he meant. I assume, since we have ancient CÃ*rdan as an example, that only extremely old Elves grew beards.

I bet you'd find a lot of bearded Elves in Valinor.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
Are beards a sign of wisdom?

So, Cirdan may not be the only Elf with a beard? Interesting... I had always just assumed that it was physically impossible for Elves to grow beards. So, I had subconsciously decided that Cirdan must have been some sort of mutant. (No offense meant to that honorable old shipwright.)

I think perhaps it's because Cirdan is just so freaking old. He was one of the original elves, as old as Finwe, Elwe and Ingwe so...

Well, if "Third Cycle of life" is in referrence to age, then beards would certainly not be a bad thing. I don't know if it would necessarily be a sign of wisdom, just a vast age, and thus expierience. Not all those who expierience so much are particularly wise -- at least among others of the same sort. I bet a bearded Elf would be wiser than any Man I could talk to, but bearded Elves among bearded Elves is another matter. Beards would be a sign of magnificent age. Ingwe Ingaran, High King of all Elves, was around the same age of CÃ*rdan and thus probably also had a long beard, I imagine golden of hue.
