I was glued to the tv during the opening ceremonies, they were magnificent indeed. The Chinese really are experts on mass choreography.
My favourite Olympic events have always been athletics and swimming. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Phelps will break Spitz's record I'll also follow the tennis tournament closely. I hope that Federer can make up for his Wimbledon loss with a gold medal.

I was at work during the opening ceremony, but I've got it taped.
I've watched some of the gymnastics so far. But I don't think I've seen that many people fall of the gear yet on an olympic game. I briefly wandered whether the chinese had coated the gear with soap to improve their own chances. Looking forward to the swimming and athletics as well.

Not big on spectacle type events, so skipped most of it.
Generally good impressions, except for the jack-booted goose-stepping soldiers carrying the flag- not exactly the best impression, but I guess the PLA had to have its moment of glory. And of course, absolutely crap local TV coverage- I know you have to show the home team, but for a small country like Taiwan you'd think they'd realise people want to watch glamour events with top athletes as well as six hours of archery. Example: huge numbers of people in this country are basketball crazy- it's easily the second most popular sport after baseball. Kobe, LeBron, Yao Ming etc. are like gods. So the China/USA game, live Sunday evening local time, is tape-delayed till 4:00 am Monday morning.

Watched Phelps get his first gold and world record! The martial arts at the opening ceremonies was awesome. My fav events to watch are swimming and gymnastics, but I'll watch whatever's on tv. The Olympics are the only sports I ever watch.

Not doing much right now on medal-nabbing, but man, I think at least three national (Belgian) records went down this weekend.
Too bad duathlon isn't an olympic discipline, our world champion just renewed his title.

That being said Im thinking the US has their head on straight finally in regards to Mens Basketball. They put a team together that has past experience and has worked together for a few years now. Coach K has been down this road and has a good repore with the players now. They looked awesome against China once they wore them down enough to make them miss shots. No one can match their intense defense and their speed so look for a long highlight real throughout the games. And I think they have adapted to these new rules with the 3 point line over 3 feet closer then the NBA and the wide base lane that favors big guys with a touch. They need to learn to play the international style of game not try to force the US style on everyone else which has been their down fall in the past. But I know teams like Spain, Argentina, Lithuania etc will give them a run if they aren’t careful. Its cool to see big time NBA players on these other teams! In a way that will help the US who is very familiar with playing against the likes of Yao Ming and Dirk Nowetzki and Pau Gasol, Manu Ginobli, Kris Kamen, etc etc etc…

*nods* We sent one sportman. I think it's about his 4th Olympics already. I remember specifically because there was a row before he could go. Only the 20 first on the world list of Table Tennis or something were allowed to go to Beijing and Saive shared the 20th place with someone who got to go instead. Big row. He ended up qualifying in another tournament.

Hardly. Your country always does pretty well on medals, for as long as I can remember.
