I saw a documentary or two on the archaeological expeditions under water near Alexandria. I think they were from National Geographic (or perhaps Arte, can't remember precisely). They focused mainly on finding the fabled lighthouse of Alexandria, though.

But there are thousands and thousands of archaeological dreams burried under water. It's just rather difficult finding them and researching them. Getting all the diving equipment and getting all the members of your expedition trained with it can take much time and money which not every university or archaeologist got, if any. Then there's the problem that not everything preserves that well in (salt) water.

Not to mention all the archaeological sites that get destroyed because somepeople decide to but a lake above it to generate electricity.

*sigh* I can make your heart bleed at times...
