And a theatrical release time of 3 1/2 hours should mean a DVD of 4 to 4 1/2 hours. So perhaps various events won't be broken up/passed over too quickly, especially since Shelob et. al. have to be covered.
Will Cirith Ungol and the Watchers be covered? Hmm. I hope that great Elf-warrior doesn't scare Captain Shagrat too much. Like Snaga said: "There's a great fighter about, one of those bloody-handed Elves, or one of the filthy tarks."

They've been saying no extended DVD will be coming. They've been saying the theatrical will be equal to an extended edition. I thought there was a topic for this. Man, I'm the thread nazi today.

When I first read this, I thought "oh, how disappointing!" But then I realized it's better because the presumption is that everything will be in the theatrical release, and I won't have to spend that extra $$$ to get two versions!

The running time was discussed in the "Rumors for RotK" thread, but other rumors (or at least one other -- who would be singing on the soundtrack, for which a thread was later opened as well)were discussed also, so I decided not to merge this with that.

That makes me wonder why NewLine is doing this, if it's true.

Exactly. It doesn't seem to make sense that NewLine would forego a chance to make very serious $$$ from an extended DVD on ROTK.

Strider

Maybe they just want to be DONE with it!!! PJ especially may be ready for a break.

Besides, then they can work up a special edition of the entire production for fall of 2004... striking while the iron is hot, rather than stretching it out another year.

They have certainly made a lot of money already - probably beyond their wildest dreams (what had their stock done since 1998 or so - I wonder?). They may just be more interested in pursuing personal satisfaction with it at this point...?

I took this to mean that the theatrical version will be 3.5 hours, so we can look forward to 4 hours or more on an extended release. That makes a lot more sense to me, and would make sense for New Line as well. I hope this is the case.

Yes, I believe it is.. There's been nothing official from the writers of indeed the studio to suggest there won't be an extended cut of film 3 made available, as has been the case previously..

My guess is the situation will be the same for all 3, so we should expect a 4 hour or so version of The Return of the King in November 2004 !

Of course, I could be wrong, but, like I say, there's no evidence to suggest they're planning on changing the sequence of a winning formula.. Personally I thikn that would be unwise
