Just to let you know I'm doing this in the SW forum too if you wanna help me out there. But I'm trying to collect all the LOTR (or ME books or books written about people in ME by tolkien). I know all the obvious ones like the movie/book trilogy and the hobbit and silmarilion (you get my point). But I need help finding some of the others can any one help me?

Some rarer ones: The Tolkien Reader, The Road Goes Ever On (out of print, costs a pretty penny used, but worth it), Bilbo's Last Song...

I believe there is a chapter in a book called "The Tolkien Compass" by Jared Lobdel (I think??) that is Tolkien's writings on some names, et al originally meant for translators, so this one section of Lobdel's (?) book would count as it was written by Tolkien. I think it's out of print though.

You can also get add-on type books like "Journey's of Frodo" by Barbara Strachey. You have to be careful that they're canon.

According to the indise page of my copy of Return of the King, here are all of Tolkien's (not obvious) books:

1) The Adventures of Tom Bombadil
2) The Book of Lost Tales: I
3) Farmer Giles of Ham
4) The Father Christmas Letters
5) Monsters and the Critics
6) Mr. Bliss
7) Pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien
8) Poems and Stories
9) Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl and Sir Orfeo
10) Smith of Wootton Major
11) Tree and Leaf
12) Unfinished Tales

If this helps you find it, The Road Goes Ever On is written with Donald Swan.

I have The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and Farmer Giles of Ham in one book, published by Unwin Paperbacks. (Maybe you can get other ones together.)

There is also The Monsters and the Critics: The Collected Essays of J.R.R. Tolkien. It includes not only the indispensible essay, "On Fairy-Stories," that is also in Tree and Leaf, but his very influential essay on Beowulf, "Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics," to which the title refers. The rarest, I suppose, of J.R.R.T's works is Essays Presented to Charles Williams, in which "On Fairy-Stories" was first collected. The most costly, by far, is the First Edition of The Lord of the Rings.

(In America, at least) It would be difficult (impossible?) to buy every volume of HoME in the same series publication. Volumes I-V are available as mass market paperback and hardbacks (as well as I/II being available in large paperbacks that look like the hardbacks). As far as I know the only History of the Lord of the Rings (Vol. IV-IX) available are the Harper-Collins trade paperbacks. X, XI, and XII are only available in the big hardbacks, none of which seem readily available.

On Amazon.co.uk you can HoME in three massive volumes.

The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, Farmer Gilies of Ham, Tree and Leaf, Leaf by Niggle, Smith of Wootton Major, are all contained within The Tolkien Reader, which is pretty much the same as Peoms and Stories.

Not to forget one of the longest pieces of Quenya poetry we have by Tolkien!

Farmer Giles of Ham, The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, Leaf by Niggle and Smith of Wootton Major are all gathered in Perilious Realms.

I'd like to add 'Finn and Hengest' to the list. Although it's not actually written by Tolkien himself, it was written using his notes on a anglosaxon poem and if anything else, it thoroughly convinced me of Tolkien's genius and his knowledge of his field of expertise.

Though it may not be an easy read, it managed to astound me completely on Tolkien's skill to get so much historical background info out of such a small piece of text. I once bought the booklet on a whim and I've been pleased ever since that I got it, especially since I no longer see it in the shop.

Along with that one, "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" wasn't written by Tolkien either...

And as he stepped down from the doors the swans did him reverence, and plucking each a great feather from their wings they proffered them to him, laying their long necks upon the stone before his feet; and he took the seven feathers and set them in the crest of his helm, and straightway the swans arose and flew north in the sunset, and Tuor saw them no more.' -Of Tuor and his Coming to Gondolin

The originally story probably not. I've never been able to get my hands on Tolkien's 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight' but I always thought it was his [Tolkien's] translation of the original poem/myth. Wasn't it?

Yes, I believe so, just like he did with Beowulf...Interestingly enough, we don't know who the actual authors of either works were, as they were completed so long ago

Unfortunately, no. But we should count us lucky that at least the texts (or parts of them) survived. Just imagining the amount of stories and mythology that was lost along the way, makes me sad.

Speaking of Tolkien's translation of Beowulf, has it been published yet? I know they discovered the manuscript a while ago and wanted to publish it but I can't remember if they finally did it or not. I haven't seen it in the bookstore yet anyhow.

Father Christmas Letters isn't ME though, same with some of the other ones. Do you want those that don't take place in ME writen by Tolkien?

I sugest that if you have a Books-A-Million near you, or a book store that offers a garuntee that they'll order all books still in print if they don't have them at the store, that you write down all of the titles mentioned here, and order them all at ones, or all sepratly from the book store. Unless you can find them somewhere eles for cheaper. This would save alot of searching time, and you wouldn't have to worry about someone over the computer lieing to you about the condition of the book. You could probally find them at a book store's websight, and order them that way, but then you would have to pay for shipping, so it's probaly chaeapest to go to the book store. You could ask them to see the cover of the book, and see if they will let you pick that out to. Have fun shopping!
