Hmm...I have three recommendations:

1. The Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien
No explanation needed. The book rocks.
2. The Complete Guide to Middle-earth: Tolkien's World from A to Z
A fascinating work. If I am correct, the most reliable "encyclopedia" on Tolkien's works available.
3. Tolkien: Man and Myth
A fascinating biography of a fascinating man.

C'mon, Ru, admit you just love the Christians here to death, esp. Gwai and me!!

(grammatical note - notice the correct usage of "me", because it's a direct object)

OK, I highly recommend HoME 3, The Lays of Beleriand. The only poetry I've ever really liked is Tolkien's, and this is awesome!! I've quoted from it before, do you remember? (and did you like it, if you remember?)

I have HoME 2 (BoLT 2), which I'm not wild about. Too many different names and too many cats. I also have HoME 7, The Treason of Isengard, also not wild about it (because I'm more of a First-Ager, like you are).

Letters is fabulous.

Also I like Bilbo's Last Song, a teensy little book but nice.

And for some really cool non-ME reading, get Leaf by Niggle, which is sometimes under the title Tree and Leaf. Also Smith of Wootton Major and Farmer Giles of Ham.

Bored of the Rings is an often hilarious but often overdone parody of LoTR.

I don't have WoTJ, should that be next on my list?

I'm actually saving up to buy all the HoMe books at once. Along with the complete Chronicles of Narnia, Dracula, and I believe the Hobbit and the Sil (Sil being an overseas copy; I doubt my first-printing one would make it).

Ruinel, Since you've already read BoLT, I'll recommend HoME 3 The Lays of Beleriand. Those poems are great.

That's book number 12 of 12 in the 'History of Middle Earth' series. It contains the making of the prologue and appendices in the Lord of the Rings, and JRRT's late writings, some unfinished stories and some essays. Yes, I would recommend it.

I would go for The Book of Lost Tales part 1 & 2 next.

Here is a good book list

This is a must have for any Tolkien fan: The Annotated Hobbit

Wow! Great suggestions.

Rian: yes.. of course I like you and Gwai, despite the fact that you are christians (just kidding).
WotJ is pretty good. If I didn't already have it, I'd get it.

Thorunn: PoME is People of Middle Earth. It's good. Not as good as Morgoth's Ring (HoME Vol X: MR). If you have to get them one at a time, I'd get Morgoth's Ring. I liked that one a lot.

ACK! Now I'm torn between HoME III: LoB and Letters! Maybe I'll look for a sale and get them both.

1) Oh, you don't like us?
2) How do you know that you'd get it? How would you know it was good?

Tolkien: Man and Myth is really a great biography. I even wrote a critical book review on it for English.

I recommend Letters. It's good because it's directly from the Man himself, as opposed to channeled through Chris, or Random Biographer #302.

Thanks Gwai and BoP. I was torn between Letters and HoME3:LoB. Leaning more towards Letters now.

Yeah, I think I'd plump for Letters over LoB - Letters is a different genre with a different view of JRRT, as opposed to more of his writings.

But LoB is really great, too - keep your eyes peeled for those sales!
