Atlantis
Do you believe that it existed? I'm not sure , but I think something like that did exist (I never believe what other people believe about things, so I hae to make up my own) I believe there was a civilization that was destroyed, and that they had great technology, and well I don't know much about it, so can you fill me in?

Many ancient civilizations were surprisingly well-developed. For instance, I think ancient Sumerian cities had running water in some of the better homes.

Well, the history channel and others like it always have things like this
![]() My favorite theory is that Atlantis was an empire in the americas. There are a lot though. Funny how the history channel has specials about Atlantis, how the pyramids were built by aliens, abductions, other strange things, etc. Fun to watch, but I can't believe they show that stuff ![]() ![]() Probably Plato (the guy who wrote about it?... unless that was that other greek guy) just made up Atlantis to make a social commentary.

I wrote my first paper on Atlantis when I was a freshman in high school. I listened to that Donovan song over and over , copying his spoken prologue verbatum as my opening! (whoo! heavy man!

Yes I do think it existed. I actually studied a lot about it as well. Some of the most recognized places as to where it could have been are, Bimini (near the Carribean), Thera (the modern island of Santorini, Greece), Malta...
A lot of work has been based around the writings of Plato, as he described it in great depth. Also, there are currently two huge excavations going on in regards to the possibilities of it being Atlantis, one on Malta and one on the island of Thera. From everything I've seen and read it leads me to believe that the island of Thera is the best possibility. They have reconstructed the look of atlantis from various ancient writings and descriptions about it, and Thera fits perfectly. Also, on Thera way back in the day there was a huge Volcanic eruption that caused half of the island to sink and be buried. Now they are finding a huge civilization within the ring that is under water and on up the shoreline that is now buried. The excavations are still currently going on and the Greek government has even outlawed scuba diving in that area for fear of vandals or thiefs. Pretty interesting stuff ![]()

I think atlantis existed, but I don't believe it had anything to do with aliens, and I don't think they had technology secrets that are ahead of our current time. It just seems impossible to me that they could keep all of their technology to themselves like that, and that they could be so incredibly advanced compared to the rest of the world. what, did they develope technology 500 billion times faster than everyone else?

Plato's Atlantis......Sir Thomas Moore's Utopia...Works of pure fiction (or were they?)
Strangly even the ancient Irish Celtic people have a legend of a country called Nu Breasil, in the west it was a land populated by "a race of men far superior in both intellect and invention *shrugs*. Anyhow...there is a good essay on Atlantis here- Help!....my home is sinking!! Last edited by Coney : 03-25-2003 at 11:12 PM. |

Well some of the theories I've heard regarding Atlantis is that is that their technologies surpassed modern technology and that they learned it from aliens or something... it was on the discovery civilization channel methinks

I think it's very possible that Atlantis existed.
There are loads of ancient cities that ended up under the sea due to earthquakes and other catastrophes. And look at all the civilizations that used to be great in ancient times and now have disappeared! I think there's nothing strange with the idea that, a long time ago, there was a civilization far more advanced than its contemporaries (though not necessarily to the point some people think ![]() Besides, all mythology has a basis in reality. A couple of centuries ago everyone thought Troy was an imaginary place- but Heinrich Schliemann found it, didn't he? ![]()

The Mines of Moria had been a mere name; and of Lothlórien no word had reached my mortal ears till I came there. I think the story of Atlantis is based on a true historical event, but enlarged over the retelling of the story. If the story really came from Egypt and Plato was just the first to write it down, then there is no telling how much of the human imagination was added to each retelling. It could have been a small off-shore island destroyed in a earthquake or any natural disaster, and after many retellings of the story it grew to a huge, advanced civilisation.

I was just thinking of creating a thread like this
Anyways I agreee with Dunedain I have read several theories and I think this is the only one that is true. The Minoans were the first Greeks to settle on the islands south of Greece. They were a very advanced civilization for their time. The islands they lived on fit Plato's descriptions of Atlantis almost perfectly. Plato says the Atlanteans were at war with Egypt, which the Minoans were. Atlantis is said to be located near the Pillars of Hercules. Though The Strait of Gibraltar has this name, there was a location on one of the isalnds called the Pillars of Hercules as well. And the volcanic eruption on the island describes the cataclysmic event that wiped out the civilization and sank the island. I had origionally read this awhile ago from a web site that gave soo much data and explanation. I looked for it, but I couldn't find the same one. There are many others, but they don't give as much detail.

I think we'll never know! Trying to piece together human history with whatever few artifacts that are revealed at a given time is unbelievably "speculative" in my book. Of course we have to do it, and we learn alot, but even the story of one person's life can be so incredible, who knows what all the mind boggling, and potential history altering details were. All the organic and soft stuff is gone, all we have are some bones, stone foundations and fragments of pottery and metal. It's wonderful to know what we know, but the "what might have been" seems as vast as the Milky Way to me.....totally tantalizing, and forever unknown! Curses on the fire that burned the great library! One of the worst things to ever happen to human culture!

Has no-one read the Illuminatus trilogy? A must-read for all conspiracy theorists. The Atlanteans are alive and well and running the US economy. Why do you think there's a pyramid with an eye on it on a dollar bill??
