I was a Brownie, Junior, and Cadet Girl Scout in the sixties. It was very innocent, and very wonderful! I was a Brownie troop leader in the eighties, that wasn't so fun! My son is currently a Tiger Cub, and my husband is a Cub Master. Our children have and will also be involved in 4H.

I tried girl scouts when i was pretty little. no offense but i didn't like it. mainly cause i didn't like the troop leader that much. Plus girl scouts just isn't for me. i quit after after a few weeks. although i love girl scout cookies.
I wanted to be in 4H so bad this year. but i missed the first meeting. it wouldn't have worked out that great anyway cause my mom is usually at work at the time of their meetings so i wouldn't have had a way to get there.

So, what is 4H?

I was a pippin, and a brownie. Never made it as far as Girl Guides cos I got sick of making cards.

I'm not a big expert on 4H, It's is an organization for youth that features doing "projects" on almost everything under the sun! There is a 4H Fair every summer at the local 4H fairgrounds. Livestock and pets are a popular compitition. There is cooking, sewing, botany, horticulture, photography, markmanship, small engine repair, arts and crafts, you name it! All the projects are displayed and ribbons and awards given. It's a great way for kids to learn and try out new things.

Well, I can't swim (lord knows I've tried but I seem to have the natural bouyancy of a rock)..........On the fatefull last day of my scouting career we were doing canoeing (not gonna let a little thing like not being able to swim stop me.....the idea is not to fall out of the canoe, right?).

So there I am, in the middle of the river, happily paddling away. The instructor paddles over and ask me to do an "eskimo roll". A pointless maneuvre that entails rolling upside-down under the water then coming back up....still in the canoe. Naturally I was a little peturbed by this so I told the instuctor where to get off (not falling asleep yet out there are we?).

Insructor yells at me to do the roll........I tell him I can't swim!

Instructor goes white.......scout leader nearly faints and the scouting insurance company probably heard me in his office and has a coronary

Instuctor yells at me to get ashore.......once again I politely tell him where to get off (I was having fun!).

I paddle away......Instuctor and most of the older scouts catch me ........brief struggle ensues........I bloody well capsize...and have to be rescued by the instructor........half drowned Coney.......not very happy at all........starts shouting at the Instructor......Scout leader intervenes (i.e. drags me away)......drives me home and two days later a letter arrives asking me not to attend any more pack meetings.

Thus endeth the rabbits Scouting career

I did have my cookery badge!

But I used to get in trouble for turning cooking/camp fires into bonfires (although we, my mates and I, did once have to have the fire brigade come to a camp site because we started a little forest-fire ).

I went to brownies and guides. stopped guides after a while cos i hated the leader ad we did the same things every year.
Now though i help out at rainbows (5-7yr olds). They are the sweetest things ever. I am doing it for my Duke of Edinburgh Award but i want to carry on afterwards.

i have been a girl scout since daisys (kindergarden) and i love my troop leader..we're going to hawaii next year, but my mom wont let me go..shes too over protective..

i found a cute bumper sticker in spencers that i gave to my guy friend whose a boy scout. it says"i got kicked out of cub scouts for eating a brownie" (for all of you who dont know, and brownie is a level of girl scouts)

Yes, but you've probably taught the scout leaders a valuble lesson.......from now on they will most likely ask people if they can swim before they take them canoeing.

Well the Scout leader (wasn't he called Akeala or summit? they all had funny nick-names) may have been under the impression that I could swm (the instructor never asked tho'......)

Sometimes I wonder how we all got through the scouts with life and limb intact (the canoeing wasn't the worst of it)....I'll post some more escapades when the thread slows down a little

There is already a thread about Boy Scouts here. I don't see why we couldn't bring it back and discuss Girl Scouts there too.
