Fell

Ok this should be an easy one. I need a definition for the word "fell". Now yeah I know generally from usage what it means but I want like an exact definition. Tolkien uses it as an adjective so much but Ive never seen it anywhere else. Is it an English term? And I reserve this question for the never wrong know it all types. You know who you are....

Oh and the first person who responds with "what happens after you trip" gets a smack.

My giant dictionary has this....1."Of an inhumanly cruel nature; fierce; unsparing "fell hordes", 2. Able to destroy; lethal: "a fell blow" 3. Dire; sinister: " by some fell chance" (Medieval latin "fello", wicked person, felon)

Ha ha! we have the same dictionary!

Thanks all. I was wondering because I actually tried to use it once or twice in normal conversation and of course got really strange looks. Probably because Im not really using it in the proper context. Its hard to fit it in in normal modern day to day conversation. Try it. "Dude, you looked pretty fell after that last shot." No just doesnt have the same ring to it.

Oh no! "www.dictionary.com"! Does this mean I'm going to kiss this gigantic "The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language" that was given to me when I started college in 1975 goodbye!! The old ways die hard, but I practically throw my back out everytime I pick it up. (which is often considering my spelling skills) It suppose it will always make a good footrest!

hobinator: that was a pretty impresive display of vocabulary brain storming. Im guessing yer into crossword puzzles too.

Lizra: I almost never use my paper dictionary but I still love the idea of having this huge dusty tomb of a book that you can barely lift to consult once in a while. So dont retire it yet. Just use both.

I always though fell meant Terrible cause you picture the Nazgul as fell...you know kind of dark and well Terrible...of course I can be in a fell mood before my morning pick up.
Insidious you wouldn't use the word Fell with the word Dude...that's seriously screwed up...wrong usage of the word instead say "My friend, thou lookest fell after thou didst shoot that last shot"....hmmm that does work. How 'bout this " You looked fell after that last shot my friend" That didn't work either.
Farewell my friends,
Sam
ps.

It's in my CURRENT signature

Of typing errors I am a true Baranedhel Lord

Dispensing grammar with my fell Elven sword

About me a nimbus doth blaze

The foundations of syntax I now raze

Though I am a lord beyond all badge and stripe

I doth proclaim to the world
" Damn I can't type
