Flaming, or How to behave decently
I'm starting this thread because I feel a little bewildered. During my time on this board there have been threads where people almost have been virtually fighting. I've read some posts which I would consider as both hostile and rude, but which did not get any comments from the mods. And vice versa, there have been posts that I've considered as humorous and cheeky, but which the mods have declared to be flaming, or at least inappropriate.
So basicly what I'm asking everyone is, where do you draw the line? And to the mods, do you have a common policy on this, or is it more up to your personal opinion? I want to emphasize that this is not a complaint. I find the people here on this board to be very nice and decent indeed, and I think the mods are doing an excellent job. I just want to clarify things, for my own sake.

Well i tend to draw the line at anything which is completally unfounded. I would like to say that all the stuff i put down is at least half true. Dont believe in lieing.
I personally love the argueement threads they are much more fun and one of ther best things about this site is there are some people that have complete opersite points of view from one another and then theres Jerseydevil

I'm sometimes surprised that some of my posts havent' got me banned, or at least admonished by the powers-that-be *shrugs*.
I say what I think......and I'm usually only half-serious at the best of times Where do I draw the line?....I don't, except for the normal "line" that I have anyway, but I do take into consideration post-counts and age when I reply.......I once got into a semi-flame war with someone, I found out later, that happened to be 13 yrs old Under my old nickname (osszie) I was perhaps the only 'mooter to have a wish of direct physical violence aimed at them.......hehe I've recieved several pm's in the past from members complaining about things I say in my posts, and I've usually gone back and edited those posts........I can be cheeky, bordering on rude, but 'tis never my intention to really insult someone/thing. |

I consider flaming to be when you directly insult a person themselves, and are not just expressing an opinion about a subject (however rudely or cheekily).

Personally, I more or less share Millane's attitude. If someone insults me, I probably won't notice

Re: flaming
I do not recall ever seeing what I would consider a flame on entmoot. But then, I was nursed on a board without moderators.

My policy:

I think there are several things to think about here. Decisions to close a thread or edit/delete a post are strictly left to the descretion of the moderator. In other words it is what he/she considers inappropriate, or nonsense posting. Somethings are cut and dry. We all know spam when we see it. We all know when something moves off topic, which I think most moderators make allowances for as long as things don't sway beyond the point of getting back to the topic at hand, and we all know what flaming is. The rules are vague in defining flaming, but, I consider that to be : name calling, insults, demeening the character of another member, etc., but at times being rude does not always consist of flaming. I for one try to keep a close eye especially on my two forums, and then I spend time browsing the others and if I see something, I will try to take care of it. That is the job of admins and super mods. Keeping the board as spam and flame free as possible. Of course since this is a MB and not a live chatroom, moderation is not scheduled, but I think you can be sure that there is a mod or admin on the board most of the time. It is important to the staff that the community is a happy and enjoyable place to discuss Tolkien and more.
If at any time, you as a member see something that you believe is inappropriate and has perhaps been overlooked by a mod, then by all means you are to report the post or thread to the mod of that forum, or to a super mod or admin via private message or email. This is a large community and is growing daily. On a MB this size, things will happen. It is up to you as members to help us keep the community a happy one.

well said SGH! I agree! but I also think it would be no fun if all arguments were stopped because someone was a little rude... if you mean something to be taken as a sarcastic remark, put a smilie after it!

I always put smilies at the end of my posts, just incase I insulted anyone by accident.

I always read thru my posts after I hit the "submit reply" button, because I find that as I type, I always have a voice inflection in mind (if that makes sense) that I try to get across by using italics, etc. But when I read how the final post appears on the thread, sometimes I notice that it could be taken wrong, so I often edit my posts to reword them a bit. I also use smilies a lot, although I detest them in real life (way overused!), but I've found they help convey a friendly attitude.
It's hard to convey attitude in a typed post, so I can see how something that appears "humorous and cheeky" to one person might appear as flaming to another, and vice versa. I really appreciate the mods keeping things under control, too.
