Pictures

I just got the Letters of JRR Tolkien at the library, and in the notes at the back, it refers to Biography and Pictures . Biography is, I presume, Carpenter's biography of Tolkien's life. But what is Pictures?

In this place will I abide, and my heirs, unto the ending of the world.'

'Then Tuor arrayed himself in the hauberk, and set the helm upon his head, and he girt himself with the sword; black were sheath and belt with clasps of silver. Thus armed he went forth from Turgon's hall, and stood upon the high terraces of Taras in the red light of the sun. None were there to see him, as he gazed westward, gleaming in silver and gold, and he knew not that in that hour he appeared as one of the Mighty of the West, and fit to be father of the kings of the Kings of Men beyond the Sea, as it was indeed his doom to be; but in the taking of those arms a change came upon Tuor son of Huor, and his heart grew great within him. And as he stepped down from the doors the swans did him reverence, and plucking each a great feather from their wings they proffered them to him, laying their long necks upon the stone before his feet; and he took the seven feathers and set them in the crest of his helm, and straightway the swans arose and flew north in the sunset, and Tuor saw them no more.' -Of Tuor and his Coming to Gondolin

I think it refers to The Pictures by JRR Tolkien. I havn't read it, but I assume it has pictures of Middle-earth drawn by the master himself. I think its out of print.

Yeah, they're talking about a book with a lot of Tolkien's illustrations of Middle Earth in it, but I've never been able to find it wherever I look. Maybe it is out of print like Cassiopea said.

*smug smile* I have it.

I've been a Tolkien fan since childhood, and my dad was the one who got me into it. He bought me Pictures years ago (like, early '80s). It has a lot of ME stuff as well as other designs and drawings. There are notes on each one by Chrostopher Tolkien. I didn't know this when i got it, but I guess there were some calendars published way back when using JRRT's drawings, and I guess Christopher decided to publish the book because the calendars were so well received.

Goodluck finding it. I have been checking and it appears to be out of print. Also, people are selling used copies of it for hundreds of dollars, check this link out, here are 5 copies that are being sold, however look at the price....

Wow, I had no idea it was worth that much! I wouldn't sell mine anyway. Plus I think my dad got it at a used bookstore, so it has no slipcover, whatever that is (is it like a jacket?).
