'tis the season of joy and we have our scrooge. :hide
Why is it you poke and prod and stir things that shouldn't be poked, prodded and stirred? If you're not happy with the world or with your view of it, I can respect it but you don't have to be negative about everything in life, there are good things around us all the time. I wonder if in a former life you were the adder in the basket? Happy New Year or a reasonable facimile thereof.

When I read things like the topic of these thread it does not make me a want to run away from into a world of escapism. It makes me want to do things to make the world a better place. Hopefully, being aware that such things can happen will make one more vigilant so that they MIGHTY not happen again. It was not a post of capitulation to the darkside but a call to Jedi. Also thank you for a what I perceive to a query and not an instagation. Quote:

Most of the atocities were committed by countries that ruled under a totalitarian government. It is rather ironic that the Soviet Union and China - countries that pledged to be for the people - had such a high incidence of death among their own citizens (outside of war).
And Happy New Years - A-E.

Perception is in the mind of the beholder.
Let sleeping dogs lay and they will cease to bite. Old enmities can simmer and go out with time and enlightenment but if one keeps stirring the pot they, like the fire, will never "go out".

I will not read them, I'm sure I've heard of them all. Reading the list would simply cause all sorts of "depression chemicals" to flood my brain. I feel "elvishly sad" when thinking of what's probably on the list. I think it's important for young people in school to learn of such things, but my spirit can hardly handle this stuff anymore. I have to be careful!

Spock was it not you in the MA thread who said something about Distrubing the Bee's nest was somethimes a good thing. I do not recall the exact Japanese you used. How do YOU decide what to disturb and what not to? Quote:
The dogs of atrocites do not sleep. They hunt the world ceaselessly. They stiff outside the door while the world slumbers. Luckily there have been the courageous who have stood up stirred the pot and have made a dent and step to making the world a better place. Perhaps there would have been no America if few rebels didn't stir the pot.

We all can stay in the past and diefy Archie Bunkerism but I don't think that or dwelling on negatives will accomplish much. Accentuate the possitive. ......to quote a recent black comic...."how come we use names we don't like in organizations representing us....The United Negro College Fund....we don't like you callin us that but we'll take your money" "and The National Association for The Advancement of Colored People, what's that about.......from now on I think I'll be "mahogony american"......

When those organizations were set up "colored" and 'negro" were acceptable. I'm sorry - but it seems like the black community or liberal left wants to keep Americans guessing on what is acceptable to call them. Also - "African-American" isn't acceptable to all blacks. I for one say blacks since i'm white and there seems be no (nor should there be) any problem in describing me as being white. I can call group of people of that skin color - brown. But my feeling is that referring to someone's skin color is just like saying - the person with blond haired or brown eyes.
Also - enlightenment doesn't make things go away on it's own. Do you think that Benjamin Franklin or the many other men of the revolution - would have been men of enlightenment if they didn't take action against the British? Ben Franklin wanted to solve the differences between America and England and was against the revolution - until he was made a fool of in the English court. At that moment he realised that America would just always be the footstools of the british and that America had to fight for it's own destiny. Also - if people don't watch movies like American History X or Basketball Diaries - they'd never get to experience and hopefully learn that not everything is perfect. That racism is an ugly thing and ignoring it - doesn't make it disappear. Or that drugs exist and can destroy your life. neither movie is a very uplifting happy movie. American History X is actually a tragedy - according to the definition I leanred in high school while studying studying Shakespeare. Sometimes it's necessary to drag things up and show people that these are things that happened in the world. We have to try preventing these things from happening again. Of course today - South Africans are mass killing each other, Iraq tortures and kills it's own citizens, North Koreans are starving to death, in Saudia Arabia they teach hatred in their schools (although they have come on TV and have said they are trying to change their school texbooks). In Bosnia - there was close to a repeat of the concentration camps of Hitler. Just wishing for these things to go away won't make them disappear.

Ok, so it boils down to a) a religious war with Muslims, first and then b) a race war within the fabric of America.
Dismal outlook. I agree with the first premise and hope the latter doesn't come to fruition. However, with people constantly dividing and splintering "kumbay ya" ain't gonna be happening any time soon. mizu no awa does mean bubbles on water and can be interpreted to mean :all for nothing, effort in vain: in western thought. ......pardon me while I go get the words to "old black joe".

Here ya go,
Gone are the days When my heart was young and gay. Gone are my friends From the cotton fields away. Gone from this place, To a better land I know. I hear their gentle voices calling: Old Black Joe Chorus: I'm coming, I'm coming For my head is bending low I hear their gentle voices calling Old Black Joe. Why do I weep When my heart should feel no pain Why do I sigh That my friends come not again Grieving for forms Now departed long ago I hear their gentle voices calling: Old Black Joe. Chorus: Where are the hearts Once so happy and so free The children so dear That I held upon my knee Gone to the shore Where my soul has longed to go I hear their gentle voices calling: Old Black Joe.

The chart is dismal but the trend in pretty good. At least it's not 1945. Apparently not a good year for many people.
