What is this book actually about!!
I might buy it but I want to know if it is a good read.
Is it complicated?

It is indeed very complicated. It consists of many unfinished (in different meanings) texts that Tolkien wrote about (among other things) Tuor when and his journey to Gondolin, Galadriel and Celeborn, a more detailed account of Isildurs last stand before he jumped into the Anduin, more stuff about the Wild men, the Palantirs and the Istari, with many notes by Christoffer Tolkien.

Don't scare them Falagar! Right, it is not like LotR, but there are good stories there. If you're not interested in the notes, skip them. The story about Tuor's journey to Gondolin is certainly a good read, the only weakness is it ends abruptly (unfinished ). Then there is 'Narn i hin Hurin', a detailed story about Turin Turambar, way better than the one given in the Sil. And there is a rather sad story about the unhappy marriage of one of the Numenorean Kings. Among other goodies.

I have it, and like it very much. It has a lot of interesting info on LoTR-related stuff, like on the black riders, and the "real" story behind how Gandalf got Thorin and co. to take Bilbo on their quest. Also some info on Rohan, and a more detailed story about Isildur losing the ring (and his life).

To understand most of it, you need to read the Silmarillion first. I know I tried to read Unfinished Tales first and it just didn't work. The only parts that made any sense were the ones about the Third Age. I still haven't made my way through all of it yet. It's on my list.

I read it right after the Sil. It has the most in depth stories that Tolkien ever wrote on the Fall of Gondonlin, and the Children of Hurin. Well worth it. You won't get that much (up to date) detail in any of his other works regarding those two stories.

I've just started to read it. Actually, I jumped to the history of Galadriel and Celeborn, but I'll go read the rest when I'm done with that. I really like it--of course, I've read one of the history of middle earth volumes, so I sort of knew what to expect.

Great point, Khamûl - I had just assumed Blackboar had read the Sil already.

If you haven't read the Sil, Blackboar, definitely read the Sil before UT - I think that will help alot. Good luck, keep us posted!

I think that the history of Galadriel and Celeborn was the most complicated part. You know, in the translation the translator wrote lots of notes in the end of each part, plus the notes Tolkien's son (I don't know how to write Christoffer( )) wrote.

My HarperCollins edition is 613 pages, with index and maps. The index starts at page 537.

Should you read the Book of Lost Tales first or the UT?

Read UT first. I don't think you have to read The Silmarillion before UT, since it contains much about the war of the ring and the characters in it. BoLT should be read after The Silmarillion, since it is based on that material. BoLT can be confusing at times, but it is well worth the effort.

You do need to read the Silmarillion first. Not only was it published before Unfinished Tales, but the majority of information in its tales comes from the stories of the Silmarillion. It just won't make a lot of sense if you don't read the Silmarillion first. BoLT can be read after UT. It is the first two books of the HoMe series, and again, is the old mythology.
