Morgul blades

Why did the elves at Rivendell melt the shard of the Witch-king's blade, when the actual sword disintegrated (sorry for the shoddy spelling) in Strider's hand? This has been bugging me for weeks!

No, no, no.

What happened was this: The witch king stabbed frodo, and the tip of the blade broke off in the wound. The rest of the blade disintigrated (when it was exposed to sunlight?), but the shard in the wound remained until elrond removed it. Then, it too disintigrated, or 'melted'.
