Genes or environment

Genes or environment, which of these do you think has most influence on us and our lives?

Debates about the relative contributions of nature vs nurture have been among the most contentious in psychology. The premise that underlie these these debates are flawed, yet they are deeply entrenched.

For developmental biologist such a question is not considered.
Every aspect of an organism's phenotype is a joint product of both.

It is gene environment interactionism.

To put your question another way what's more important the engine or the gas? Or, what's more important that determining the area of a rectangle the length or the width?

It is because of nature ( genes) that you can be affected my nurture( environment)

The more nature the more nurture. Genes allow the environment to influence the development of phenotypes.

I've heard many answers to that question over the years, and I don't think I've ever heard it put so precisely. Bravo, afro-elf.
I think it's interesting, though, what new research has determined about how certain characteristics are most likely genetic. For example, I heard of a report that shyness is genetic. Don't know how they came to that conclusion, but it's interesting nonetheless.

It's just notes I had gathered over the years from those who put it in succint terms. I can't take much credit.

There was something in "Life" magazine that I'm guessing was form around Nov of 98' I think the picture of a baby was on the cover. It was about this topic in general and it had blurp about genetic shyness

I can go nuts just thinking about this. (Is that btw caused by my genes?) What makes me the person that I am? What determines my personality? It seems to me that genes is the main answer, since my DNA limit my possibilities. If my environment changes, I also would change, but change would be determined by my genes. Scary.

Yeah, they kind feed on the other. Your environment can affect the hardware too.
