Dancing LotR style ; )

Does anyone know how to dance The Springle-ring (a hobbit dance)? I've been wanting to learn ever since I heard the name! Or a link where you can learn how?

Also, who else thinks that elves or Rangers Riverdancing would be cool? I'm not sure how I like it......although seeing Strider in one of those billowing white shirts is ...well, DIFFERENT, and I love the thought of all the Rangers stomping on the stage....

That's the most disturbing thought I've had in *checks watch* a couple of hours.

Riverdance is actually performing here and well, I don't really like it that much.

Here's the disturbing thought that this thread has inspired for me: the good folk of Gondor doing the Hoky-Poky at Aragorn and Arwen's wedding reception.

Strider

Somehow when I picture elves dancing (not that I've ever actually pictured this before), I see them in a more formal English ballroom country dance, as seen in Emma, Mansfield Park, Pride and Prejudice, etc. I have no idea why...there is no textual basis for this vision.
I do not see people as "serene" as elves doing anything remotely resembling clogging or Irish "step" dancing.
BTW, I adore Riverdance.....wish I could see it live.

Ergh. While I greatly respect Irish dancing (I used to live with some Irish people, and they taught me some - it was fun! ), I intensely dislike how some half arsed irish-american guy came along and commercialised it. There, that's my piece said!

I'm with Elda on this one: I always imagined elves dancing a more formalised style (like those 18th century ton dances), but in a more free-spirited fashion. Something graceful, and free. Hobbits I kinda thought did the more energetic "barn dances."

I never could imagine elves dancing. Now I think of it, Eldanuumea, that IS more like how they would dance!

*has minor heart failure* MORODRIM! Are you trying to do away with me altogether?! I'm having a hard enough time as it is, what with my imagination turning traitor, and showing me hobits on-stage, Gimli in a tutu.....etc. Compliments of my dear sis......

Hobbits barn dancing! Cute! I like it!

Tolkien discarded the idea, but the Hoky-Poky was originally the way that Sauron came into possession of the Rings of Power.

"You put your Elf-ring in,
you put your Elf-ring out.
You put your Elf-ring in
and you shake it al about.
I steal them from your fingers
and I make them slave to mine!
That's what it's all about!"

I picture the elves dancing more as in ballet; remember Luthien dancing among the pines for Beren? I picture her kind of floating gracefully above the daisies. If they danced in groups, I guess they could do 18th century formal dancing. How do hippies dance? When I was a hippie I never had time for dancing.

We recently finished a production of The Hobbit at a local theater here and for the opening of the Rivindell scene we had the elves doing all sorts of random dancing. One of them did some tap dancing. Another was trying to tango with Thorin, And yet another was doing what she calls her "happy dance". This all took place while said elves were singing the "Tra-La-La-Lally Song"
Aside from that when I think of Elves dancing I get mental image of various elvish couples waltzing to the song "Wunderbar" from "Kiss Me Kate". I really don't know why...

I picture elves dancing in a kind of medieval way (which I suppose is close to hippie style dancing if you think about it). Hobbits I picture as more the Riverdancers. But barn dancing works, too. I'm sure they all had a few different styles of dancing, depending on the situation and the style of music.

When I think of elves dancing, I see a lot of synchronized, graceful movements, swaying back and forth, and, depending on the elves, waltzing around a ballrooom floor. To "Waltz of the Flowers" from the Nutcracker for some reason. That and Celtic music.

Hobbits are definately barn dancers, and the idea of a Ranger Riverdance is hilarious!!!!

As to Gondorians doing the Hoky-Pokey, that is somewhat disturbing. Orcs on the other hand.... I'm kidding!!!!!! That would be bad. But funny. Possibly.

I love the picture of hobbits barn-dancing! It's just too cute!

ANYONE doing the Hokey-Pokey is disturbing, to say the least. * shudders* Just don't imagine Gollum doing it!

I can't decide on the Ranger Riverdancing thing. They seem like the sort to dance it, but my lips start twitching each time I imagine it.......

This is also how I've pictured the Elves dancing. It fits in with them playing music on harps.

i picture hobbits "barn dancing" for sure...for elves well i guess its all about what they are doing. sometimes more of a ballet only less...ballet. often kind of, well, just dancing around. but gracefully.while trying to picture other races just now i got quite a disturbing picture of an orc rapping. not really a dance, well kind of hip hop dancing but rapping at the same time...dont know where that came from.

Orks....rapping.....

Anyone got an idea for Dwarves? I get either them slowly doing some sort of medieval dance, or a Tarzan-y sort of dance. Sorry. Must be some strange kind of flashback to Ghan-buri-ghan.....

yeah, i know. the orc thing was a bit scary...the dwarves i don't really picture dancing at all. if anything, sort of a primitive medieval-ish sort of dance. or even a bit like the native americans in my area in a weird way, only not so...native american. hey i know, ents dancing.
