The Silmarilion

I have found that the Silmarilion, while it is a very good book, is very confusing. Could anyone help me understand it? When did the dwarves come in? Do wizards ever appear? I'm so confused.

Dwarves were created by Aule without Eru's permission, but Eru allowed them to live. He put them to sleep until after the Elves were created. I think that is in "Of Aule and Yavanna," but I'm not sure. Wizards are mentioned in "Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age," and Gandalf is also mentioned in "Valaquenta" under "Of the Maiar" using the name Olorin.

they are reffered to as the istari and are only called by their elivsh names i believe.. curunir mithrandir etc.
in "of the maiar" it speaks of them.

The wizards don't come until the Lord of the Rings.

I've read the Hobbit and the lord of the rings (Loved Both!) and was told to read the silmarilion next by quite a few people.

Anyway. . . Is the silmarilion more of a history book than a novel???? Someone sum the book up for me please before I go buy it I don't want to buy something then find out I hate it! But I know I am interested in the history etc etc the itty gritty detail about Tolkiens world lol. Someone just give me some idea of what this book is about and like and how its written like!

Many Thanx In advance - Princess Arwen -x-

Sum up the Sil? Yeah right! All I can say is that it's not one big storyline like Hobbit or LOTR, but rather a series of stories regarding mainly the first age of Middle Earth.

Ok as long as it is some what like a story. lol Could you rate on the scale of 1 to 10 how difficult it is to actually read. Being 1 easy peasey and 10 being rock solid.

Thanx!

The Silmarillion is the account of the creation and the coming of the Elves and Men in the First Age. It is also the account of the Silmarils that were made by Feanor, their theft by Melkor, and the Exile of the Noldor in Valinor to Middle-earth in their efforts to recapture the stones. In all this is woven many battles, and love stories. It is a much more narrative peice of work then LotRs, but it certianly has an appeal and beauty all its own. You may find it tough going when you first begin to read. It seems that the biggest problem most folks complain about is keeping track of all the name of the characters. It is also a book that probably requires more then one read to really be appriciated, but I guarentee it will be well worth your trouble. An awsome book, but you must be determined.
