Parents who drive you crazy

Am I the only one who has a parent who totally refuses to accept that LOTR is brilliant fiction?

My mother drives me crazy, she dismisses LOTR as "weird" and says I have "weird" tastes in books but, of course, she's never even read any of Tolkien's works!

I really hate her attitude sometimes. She totally refuses to accept that people's tastes vary and just because they may be different to hers it doesn't mean they're wrong.

Sorry if this is a bit of a rant but I had to get it out of my system!

Just ignore it! Sounds like she's mad about something (lord knows what!) and is dismissing LoTR's cause she knows it will irritate you. You could try showering her with affection until she felt like a real meany and suffered a bad case of motherly guilt! This works better than fighting! Actually just ignore this post too!

my mom is the one who gave me the boxed set of books...
on the other hand, i wish she had never heard of tolkien in a trade for some of her other qualities .. like being rasist(sp?)
and very beaver cleaver like.
my dad is quite retarded too. he told me that if i ever, date or marry a black man, (although he said another word) that hes changing his name as no to be associated with me anymore. thye also tell me to lose weight, and stop eating so much. right now im grounded until the end of school (only one more week of 1/2 days) cause they think that my b's aren't good enough.
yea, i would trade that for some LOTR hating.
real quick.

My mum read FotR when she was a lot younger, and never really got into it, therefore she never finished LotR. Yesterday, she was asking me what I was going to read this summer, and I listed just about everything Tolkien ever wrote. She asked me if I was reading any 'decent literature.'

My dad couldn't get through TTT, and my mom hasn't read any of it. They pretty much don't care about my obsession with it, because I am discreet, and they're just glad I'm reading, instead of doing nothing (which is often what my stebsiblings do).

They drive me crazy in other ways.

My parents think I'M the crazy one. My mom read the books when she was younger. My dad saw the movie, and he liked all of it, except for the ending. They got me the soundtrack for Christmas.
On the other side of the fence, they'll only let me on entmoot for 15 minutes a day. As you all know, that's practically NOTHING! They think I'm too obsessed or something...I don't know. They're not exactly crazy. But the 15 minutes policy IS!

I almost walked out of the movie as well. No offence, but the movie isn't LOTR. It's Peter's version.

My parents tend to generally accept that I like to read Tolkien, though I'm sure they think I should be doing other things instead. One of my mom's most common sayings to get me to stop reading is, "It's a beautiful day. Why don't you go outside and..." fill in the blank with various outside activities. Sometimes it just gets annoying.

It took my parents a little while to understand that Entmoot was okay, but I showed my mom the MOot and she says the Mooters are intelligent and not hte kind of crazy ppl who are all over the net, according to her. Her fears of me getting caught up in nonsense or stalked are certainly grounded with all the horror stories people tell, but she likes the Moot.Sometimes she reads the posts and stuff, not to keep an eye on me, but just becuase she likes to hear what we all have to say.
HOwever, she hates my typing skills . . . .

But yeah, parents can be the biggest pains in the world sometimes.

Mine didn't want me reading LOTR. When they found out I already had (because I bought a set after reading it at the library) I think they almost threw them out. I talked 'em out of it but they still think I'm screwy for reading Scifi/fantasy. (and I did find certain of my books missing from time to time, not that I ever caught them 'removing' my books) Hence I didn't start seriously collecting book until I grew up and moved out. I was afraid I'd lose them. Sad that the 'rents couldn't take the time to be my buds till I grew up and moved out. If they had concentrated more on me being someone they could have a relationship with instead if concentrating on making rules to keep me 'safe' it woulda gone better.

I hid my LOTR copies after a few of my books went missing. I didn't want to deal with my reaction or my parents' if those had turned up 'missing'.

Thanks for all the replies. Made me feel better. The reason why my mother makes me so mad is that she bases her opinions on prejudice and ignorance and that counts for nothing my my view.

I have no problem with someone reading LOTR carefully, understanding it and then criticising but to criticise when you haven't even read it - now that makes me angry!

My parents still think somehting suspicious is going on in the Moot, even though I've shown them a few threads! I swear I'll never understand them.
They continue to wonder what draws me to Tolkien. Well, maybe if they read the books they'd find out!
