Why Greenwood?

Forgive me if this exists, admins. (I start all my threads with that)

Why did Sauron choose to reappear in Greenwood, where there are Elves? Why not start in Mordor? Or did he not have a choice? I'm confuzzled.

he didnt reappear in mordor right away becuzgondor hadminas ithil and he didnt have the might to return to mordor and succesfully hold it.
he needed a place where he could gain back his strength and greenwood is a logical place because it was a gigantic forest. he did the samething after he fought huan as a werewolf. he fled to Taur-nu-Fuin(sp?).

Thanks! It just seemed odd that he would reappear in a place with ELVES of all creatures...His enemy...

well..it was a big arse forest and i am sure there was uninhabited parts..then when he got there he filled that area with fear and horror and the elves shunned that part of the forest..my guess

The Elves of Greenwood had already withdrawn to the north in the Second Age. So Tar-Elendil guess is right the south part with the hill were Sauron build Dol Guldur was not inhabited when Sauron came there.

Mordor was occupied by many fortresses Gondor had built to keep watch over the land. It wasn't just that Minas Ithil was there, but that Gondor had complete control over Mordor.

Sauron would have wanted a base close to his enemies so that he could assess their strengths. But his decision may ultimately have been decided by the location of the One Ring. Even though he could not sense it, he was drawn to it, as it was drawn to him. And at that time (circa TA 1050) the Ring was located in the waters of the Gladden Fields, which were almost due west of Amon Lanc, the hill where Sauron built Dol Guldur.
