Gimli Why?

Why was Gimli allowed to go over to Valamar, when he wasn't an Elf or Ring-bearer. Did Gimli wield a ring before LotR, and which one if he did??????????????

Yeah, Legolas was sailing to Valinor and took Gimli with him. I guess because of their great friendship the Valar couldn't say no.

I personally think that it was because of his friendship to Legolas (he was an elf-friend, was he not?). And besides that, he killed more orcs than Legolas.

It gives a few (good) reasons in the appendices.

Gandalf

Maybe you're right but I think that because Gimly was in the fellowship and because he was an important dwarf the Valar let him come in to Valinor.

I'm not sure if the importantness of a dwarf matters to the Valar or the Elves. I still think it was his friendship with Legolas and his awe of Galadriel that got him across.

Gandalf

The Valar don't care if Gimly is a dwarf or not. They care if Gimly is good or bad or if he deserve to be in Valinor.

Also, it is not definite that he went, only rumored...

He was an elf-friend, like others have said. Gimli and Legolas were probably such good friends by that time that Legolas wouldn't have gone to Valinor without Gimli there.
By the way, I think only elves get into Valinor usually. Men have another reward promised. But this was an exception.

You're such a boring skeptic! If you've read the Silmarillion, I bet you think that Tuor died!

We must doubt everything. No, I know, but it said that in the appendices, that he was only rumoured to have gone, but didn't necessarily go. I'm reading the Silmarillion, but I'm not very far yet so I don't yet have an opinion on the death/not death of Tuor.

I'm learning a lot from reading tolkien's letters. On Sept 25, '54 he wrote: "...in this story it is supposed that there may be certain rare exceptions (to the rule that only High Elves could go to Eressea) . . .and so certain 'mortals', who have played some great part in Elvish affairs, may pass with the Elves to Elvenhome. Thus Frodo (by the express gift of Arwen) and Bilbo, and eventually Sam (as adumbrated by Frodo); and as a unique exception Gimli the Dwarf, as friend of Legolas and 'servant' of galadriel."
Note that Sam went too, eventually.

I think Sam went as he was a ringbearer - if only for a while.
I agree that it was to do with Gimli's friendship with legolas , his allegiance to Galadriel and also the fact that he brought a time of peace and friendship between the ever waring elves and dwarves.
