I've never read anything about the half-dwarven.

Anyway, regarding height, I shall submit the following guestimates:

Dwarf and hobbit : 4ft 3inches
Dwarf and normal man: 5ft 4inches
Dwarf and elf: 5ft 7inches
Dwarf and Numenorean: 6ft 1inch
Dwarf and ent: 9ft 6inches
Dwarf and troll: 9ft 6inches
Dwarf and Argonath: 180ft 6inches
Dwarf and dragon: 30ft long
Dwarf and western eagle: 25ft long
Dwarf and Balrog: 8ft 6inches
Dwarf and Oliphaunt: 10ft

I hope everyone enjoyed those mental images. I did.

I would like to see the cross with the oliphaunt. I wonder if it would be bipedal, or if it would still use four feet. Could you immagine having to fight one of those in battle?

Half dwarf half elf? How likely is that to happen?

There are no Half-dwarves in Tolkien. He describes a group of Easterlings in Sauron's service as "men like half-dwarves". That phrase has apparently led many people to conclude that they were indeed half-dwarves. They might have been, but it is not clearly stated. The passage is extremely ambiguous.

Tolkien sure liked being ambiguous didn't he? Think he sat there at his desk thinking "Hrmm, I'm going to have millions of fans some day. Let's see how hard I can make it for them to figure out if balrogs have wings or not"?

Considering that at least 75 per cent of those millions of fans accept the wings, I would say he didn't make it as hard as all that.

The other 25 per cent seem to be just as adamant in their disavowal of the wings.

So, really, there is no ambiguity at all. The Balrog of Moria has wings 75 per cent of the time, and it doesn't have them the other 25 per cent of the time.

Plus or minus 5 or 6 per cent, of course.

O Anduril! I always knew you'd eventually warp and twist my mind to your way of thinking, but really? A Dwarf and an Oliphaunt? Aaaaiiii!! The pictures in my head! Where, O where am I going to put the beard?

I am thus glad that mine own mental constructs have been transmitted with clear accuracy into thine own brainstem.

In any case, perhaps the beard could go under the trunk, as a type of furry lining? Or perhaps an undersided mane or main or maine, depending on the correct spelling.

But would the beard not look better an the end of it's trunk? What an awesome weapon of war that would be. A giant Oliphaunt stampeding towards the puny defense, and then tickling them with it's whiskery badness. (Oh, and I do believe you mean 'mane'.)

Anduril smiles. He is thus amazed at the thoughtfulness of BoP. Who else would have thought of such a clever and intense location for a beard? "No-one, I tell you!"

Anduril sits back and constructs a mental image of a 10ft oliphaunt with a beard at the end of its trunk, tickling rohirrim...

Yea, but tis your wisdom that made me think of a beard weilding Oliphaunt in the first place! Methinks the war would have had a very different outcome if the entirety of Rohan was succumbed to the whiskery evilness of thy peanut sized brained animals of fury. And yet, there is hope. If the beard weilding eagles are unleased upon the Oliphaunts, with their stubby legs of fury, then Rohan may yet have hope!

Thine imagination is incredibly wonderful, percise, concise and adept. I totally agree with your thought on the weapon of war a bearded oliphaunt would make, and I also agree with thine bearded eagles, and the domination they would bring to the hosts of the west.

But what dost thou, in thine impenetrable wisdom, think of the existence of the bearded balrog? Ist that not scary as hell?

Yea! That is as scary as 'ell! I would envision the bearded bit to be placed upon the balrog's back! We all know the evillness of a hairy back, so it seems only fitting that the balrog-dwarf would manifest there! And those things that look like wings? Well they're actually stumpy dwarven arms that have mutated onto the balrog's back....

Woah, creepy!! Your thought provocations have lead to my destined nightmares...

Less creepy, bad or evil, but strange nevertheless, is the occurence of the Argonath-dwarf...

Well yes, that does require less thinking. Still, a real beard on a pillar? I don't want to think how an Argonath and a dwarf produced a child from this union....
