Elven Eyes

what color would they be? I've always imagined it to be some weird silvery/grey/hazel color that's hard to put your finger on

but they could also be this really awesome blue or green color.... I can't see elves with brown eyes (hah! get the joke? see... eyes....I'm a moron)

Don't hold me to this, but shouldn't they just have variating eye colours.

I THINK that the Noldar were MOSTLY gray eyed with dark hair

Save for the house of finarfin who had blonde and blue

vanyar blonde and blue

the sindar and avari i think were of all various kinds

i've always pictured elves with intense blue or green eyes, but i'm an elf and i have brown eyes. and i will NOT laugh at that pun...i will NOT laugh at that pun...i will NOT laugh at that pun..oh what the hell *laughs maniacally* ok.

and silvery eyes would also work. yeah. that definitely works. cool!

I have no idea what elven eyes actually look like so this is just a guess... I imagine elves eyes to be blues or greens and extremely bright and expressive. who knows... maybe they have purple eyes

I've always pictured most elves with grayish/hazel and/or green eyes. I've pictured one or two elves from the Sil with blue eyes, but none with brown.

Well, since brown is not a very, er, bright eye color, I've always imagined them with light colored (ie blue, green, hazel, gray) eyes that sort of...glowed...not creepy like. Well, it looks right in my mind, and that's what reading is all about, right? Visualizing!

I imagine them to be as varied as human eyes. However, I think that they'd probably reflect light better and even glow at night even when there's little light; knowing that they have eyesight closer to those of better-seeing animals.

I would have thought grey or green eyes. Possibly purple for some of the ladies.

I don't think of grey really being a good eye color for elves. It seems to dull. Silver would be okay, and so would green. I have seen brown eyes that could be consitered bright. They would be a lighter shade of brown, but it could work.

Twilight, the next time you think 'too dull', remember that Tolkien's world was written in a near-victorian era (and style) before society was awash with fantasy writings of elves with flourescent glamrock hairdos and purple eyed beasts. In our modern quest for ever-increasing stunning visuals, remember that the the true beauty of Middle-earth lies in its subtlety.

Think of two oak tables. One an antique, the other, a shiny brand new model from the Oak-Barn factory. While the latter jumps out at you visually, it is upon closer inspection that the important details are noted: What first looked like a dull, drab finish on the antique is actually revealed to have many yellow-hued shades that subtly play off the light, giving depth and character to the fine grain of the old wood. The brand new table is shiny and blinding in nearly all light, the thin veneer of the top is one dimensional and looks artificial.

Still closer inspection reveals the simple strength and beauty of mortise and tenon joinery, while the new table has bullet-straight lines from machine-milling and metal braces and screws holding the legs on. One knock on the anituqe tells you it is solid thorought by it's near musical sound, while the same knock on the new table tells of particle-board and plywood beneath.

The antique is for discriminating tastes, for those that appreciate the subltly of simple grey or blue eyes, knowing that their sparkle comes from ancient wisdom and noble character rather than overt suggestion. I'd personally, not want my elves any other way...

This is all of course, my humble opinion.

Btw, all Elves had the light of the stars in their eyes that shown upon them at their awakening. Apparently though The Elves that returned to Middle-earth in exile had a brighter and sharper piercing glance, because of dwelling in the light of the Two Trees. This was mainly the Noldor.

I must comment on the quote Sister Golden Hair brought up from the Appendices. Tolkien was indeed speaking generally of all the Elvish race, plainly, but he did not have all of them in mind. Only the House of Finarfin, he says, have golden hair. What about the entire race of the Vanyar? What about Thranduil of the Grey-elves, or that nameless blond elf in LothlÃ³rien, helping Haldir attach ropes across the stream to carry the Fellowship across? What about the Elves related to Thingol and MÃ*riel Therinde with their silver hair? What about Nerdanel wife of FÃ«anor, with her red-brown hair, the three of her children who took after her, her father Mahtan (or Sarmo) and all their unnamed relatives?

Most of the Seconds and Thirds, the Tatyar and Nelyar (from which came the Noldor, Teleri and the Avari) were dark of hair, but there are exceptions besides Finarfin's house.

In my opinion elves had the normal range of eyecolours, just as humans but with perhaps little dots of light in them. Probably better than my brown-green-mudcolour

My opinions didn't come from strange fantacy writtings or movies. They came from what I like and from what I ahve observed in human eyes. I do realise that there would be differances in elven eyes, so that is a really bad way of comparing it. I am sure there is plenty of variation within the elven race for eye color.
