Appendices

Is that the plural of appendix?

Anyway, my stupid copy of LOTR doesn't have them, and I don't know if I am missing out on a lot of interesting information. Could a very kind person please tell me what they consist of, how many there are, etc.? Thank you...

The appendices (I think that's right) are found in the back of The Return of the King, or at least in mine. They contain a brief summary of the ages, languages, occurrences, and peoples of Middle-Earth. I think it's A-F, making it six appendices, but I'm not positive.

You're right:
A: Brief history of Middle Earth (It's all in the Silmarillion in much more detail.
B: Timelines: Sort of a history of Middle Earth for those you don't like to read more than they have to
C: Family Trees: Interesting, but not essential.
D: Calenders: Mostly about the history of the Shire calenders. Once again, sort of interesting, but not essential to the story.
E: Writing and Spelling. Pronunciation, mostly. I felt stupid after I read it because I realized I was pronouncing everything wrong.
F: Languages: Unfortuanately, it doesn't include how to speak them: Just history.

Hope I was helpful!
~Rosie~
PS: I don't know what the plural of appendix is either....when I have to write it here, I either put appendices (probably right) but sometimes I put appendixes. In Spanish, it would be appendices, but I don't know about English. (And English is my native language too! I know more about grammar en Espanol than in English!)

Sorry that was so long.

I love the appendices! They are so much fun, especially right after having finished LotR. Also, there is some information in the timelines that I really appreciate having, and the pronunciation guide is a great thing!

How is it that your copy of LOTR is missing the appendices?

I really like the appendices, they're very useful. Unfortunately I think you must have the book they used for the animated FOTR + TT film (Soron? The appendices clearly explain this error.).

What is the plural of apocalypse?
Is the plural of hippopotamus, hippopotami?

You have to read the appendi because they carry on little bits of the story like Thorongil, or the dwarf/orc war,or the story of aragorn and arwen. I like the dwarf histories and the histories of men personally. The histories of elves is better explained in the Silmarrilion as is Elronds heritage

the appendi/appendices/appendixes are worth reading because they tell the story of Arwen and Aragorn. Before reading them I was somewhat confused as to who arwen actually was.
i also loved the family trees because they explained the whole 'how exactly are bilbo and Frodo related or not related?' thing.
very helpful.

appendices/appendixes Are both correct plural forms of the word. As are indexes/indices. But someone once told me that the ability to spell was inversely correlated with intelligence.

The appendices also have (in the timeline section) what happened to all the fellowship members after the war, which I found very interesting.

Oooh, I forgot about that. It's really entertaining, because of what happens at the end made me cry and the timeline consoled me. (Sorry that was sort of confusing, I didn't want to give anything away.) The appendixes are entertaining, but not really essential. You should read them.....you can get it out of a library or something and just read the appendixes.

Haha! I thought about that one, and I've decided there isn't one. Really, you can only have one apocalyse, right? After just one apocalyse, it's kinda hard to have another one, no?

How can there be no plural to apocalypse if there is a plural to creation. If there is only one end how can there be many beginnings. I sort of know what you mean about not understanding who Arwen was. But when Aragorn is given his present in Lothlorien I got the message.

Anyway what do you mean inversely proportional? What if you are highly intelligent at English? I however am not and can't spell so Iguess the theory sort of works

Nazgul

That was a little gollumy(sneaky). How many horse men will appear and what will be their names. I mean the 4 were created as the ultimate mortal fears do we have any more centuries later? How about the fifth being clowns ,or any more seriously.....
