Congrats on your cats! I'm personally more of a dog person but that's just me. I seem to have bad luck with kitties!

I have never had a cat before. I like playing with them when I am at somebody elses house that does have a cat. They are fun to play with. I like cat because you can pick them up and hold them. That is harder with most dogs.

I love cats and dogs. I find cats easier, and cheaper to care for and feed though. You can leave a cat at home alone for a day and it will pretty much take care of itself, as long as you leave out the food and water. the doggie on the other hand seems to get upset when you leave and has a temper tantrum and tears out the trash, and rips up the pillows, not to mention the little potty problems.

SGH, exactly how I feel. I love both, but cats in general are easier to care for.

Not mine though. She's twenty years old (yup, born in 1982) and has had a lot of kidney problems. We must have three or four litter boxes all around the house because she moves very slowly, and she only eats wet food. Bah. But I love her, since she's been around since before me.

I have lost several cats, and one dog to traffic. I had a cat once, and I got her when she was just a kitten, maybe four weeks old. She was a beautiful calico. I had her for fourteen years, and she got sick all of a sudden. I had to have her put down. She was so beautiful. I had her longer then any pet ever. I have three dogs now. A ducktail retriever, a chawawa, and a terrior mix. The first two are males and the last female. They get along great. I would love to have a cat, but the retriever would eat it.

Our family just got a kitten, and since none of us have ever really had a cat (or kitten) before, I'd really appreciate it if all you cat owners out there could give me some advice.

Quick kittie intro:

Name: (doesn't have one yet, but we are open to suggestions)
Gender: Male
Colors: black on top, white on bottom, with light-brown stripes on the black. Very cute.
Personality: not too sure yet, because we only got him today, but he likes you to rub his tummy and doesn't seem to mind if you pull his tail gently. He also likes it if you rub his neck and behind his ears.

Thanks.

Please, don't wake me, no, don't shake me
Leave me where I am - I'm only sleeping

Everybody seems to think I'm lazy
I don't mind, I think they're crazy
Running everywhere at such a speed
Till they find there's no need (there's no need)

Please, don't spoil my day, I'm miles away
And after all I'm only sleeping..."

He will always like to be rubbed around the neck and ears. All kitties love that!

You are going to enjoy having a kitten, but remember, he is just a baby and will take some time to settle into his adult personality.

Kittens are very active and love to play (you have probably noticed this already...) Be sure to have lots of safe toys for him to play with and do take lots of time to play with him as well. Interaction between a cat and his people is vital. He needs to bond with you. The more you play with him and interact with him, the better a pet he will become. Good toys for him right now are small toy mice, small balls, wadded up paper, kitty fishing poles (check your pet supply store). He will like to chase things and will rough-house with you if you gently rub his tummy.

Discipline should be firm but gentle and consistent. Loud noises are good. When he goes somewhere you don't want him to be, clap and say "NO!" Don't use his name when you discipline or he will associate it with punishment and NEVER, EVER strike your cat!

Be sure to have him checked over at the vets office and tested for any diseases that might be problematic. The vet will also be able to recommend the best time to have the cat neutered...yes this is something you WANT to do!!! If male cats are left unneutered, they will spray-mark their territory with strong-smelling and unpleasant urine, they will get into fights with other tomcats (often sustaining injuries) and they will be far more susceptible to wandering off for long periods of time.

I have a lot of cat experience, so if you have any questions, I'll be happy to help you anytime.

He won't actually listen to you, but you'll feel much more in charge and can walk away, proud that you DID YOUR DUTY.

Meanwhile the cat will still be where you don't want him. I recommend using a broom to beat the crap out of the little bugger till he moves.

A broom? Isn't that a little too soft? I'd reccommend a shovel.

You said it yourself. I did not. Would not. And will not.

Since Tessar knows nothing about cats, please disregard the above posting.

And any future posts he may make in this thread.

I will admit that my current cat has spoiled me. He is not a discipline problem. He does not jump on counters, tables or mantlepieces; he does not climb curtains or get atop the refrigerator. He behaves perfectly and has always done so.

(For Tessar....

I have found a spray bottle of water is very effective. They hate water.
