Sudoku

I have been trying to figure it out. But at least I've made a template.

http://www.geocities.com/greywolf1735/Sudoku2.doc

Try it out.

Holy crap. How do you guys do it!? I worked on one for half an hour and I didn't get very far. The only thing I did was narrow down what numbers could be in each of the blank squares.

Can you share some tricks with me?

The only thing I really know about Sudoku is the rules. Each of the bold-outlined 3x3 squares must contain the numbers 1 through 9 with no repeats. Same with each row, and each column of the 9x9 square.

And Sudoku is of Japanese origin.

And that I stink at it. The Globe and Mail publishes a Sudoku game every Saturday IIRC.

Best thing to do: mark down all of the numbers that can be in a certain square. Obviously, the squares with only one number must be that number. If needed, do some guessing.

I did do that, but I found there were at least 4 possibilities for every square. How do you know which one to guess at? There's only 1 answer, so you only have a 1 in 4 chance of guessing right. If you're wrong, you'll only find out 1 hour later when the very last square doesn't work.

Well you should really try to avoid guessing. It depends on the difficulty of the Sudoku but often you can solve it without having to guess at all.

So somewhere in the Sudoku grid is a square you can narrow down to one option, which than narrows down the other options, etc?

I'm looking at the original one and I just can't see a square like that.

Are you looking at the one in the link now or the original one?
If you are looking at the original one and want a hand then look at the spoiler beneath and it'll say an easy one to start with.

Look at the bottom row of boxes and try and work out the 5 for the bottom-middle.

I've been doing those puzzles for quite a while now. I've done a few five stars

Thank you Telcontar! GW, you're just mean.

Here's one I scanned from an old Globe and Mail. I didn't realise they printed a Sudoku game every day. Fun!

Are you saying you're not good at Sudoku!? After that death one you made us, I assumed you were an expert.

I'm trying to solve the one I posted, and I think I'm going to get it. I copied the numbers into the template you made GW, and now I'm narrowing down which numbers can go in the squares.

I've already determined the possibilities, now I'm just narrowing down the squares to one! Booya.
