I think they get stuck in other clothes, and then fall out of your trouser leg somewhere. Or, I think you miss taking them out of the drier, and then they get taken out with the next load which is going to someone else's room, and it gets lost along the way.
I just took all the fun out of that one didn't I...

Small gnomes, who enjoy stealing the socks before they get washed and "ruined" (in their opinion) take them back to their lair where they stew the socks over a blazing fire, which fills the air with ‘noxious fumes’ making them all "Sock Happy"...many communities have united against these noxious gnomes by implementing odor control practices to reduce the "temptation" to the little buggers. Dr. Scholl’s inserts (Fresh Breeze Scent) is even sponsoring an information rally.
