LOTR Risk
I, er I mean young Master Samwise, got this (the board game Risk adapted to Middle-Earth) for his Christmas.
Anyone else got it? What do you think about it? We have only played it once but the young whippersnapper cuffed my goodly ass with his axis of evil. |

It looks quite cool, but it's for four players only. Normal risk admit six players, and I like to play it with as many players as I can.
I don't know how is it in your countries, but in Spain there is also an extension with the map of Mordor. But also for four players

I got it a few years back, Risk being one of my favorite games. The map of Middle Earth was pretty good, and the game itself was fun.

I'm a big fan of Risk, and I played this one day with a bunch of my friends. WE had a Risk Marathon.
It's pretty fun, but it's rather hard to win if you're Sauron's side...though, the boys playing the "evil" side won within thirty minutes because of a lucky dice roll.

Seen it in loads of games shops and department stores.
My only criticisms are that it takes a bit too long to set up and the rules are totally user-unfriendly. However, I like the fact that there's a time limit and the additional rules, events, etc are groovy. |

Heh. You know, from my experience those are complaints that can be made of the original risk as well.
You know, Starr, I thought the evil side had the better placement of the two - Mordor and Harad are really easy to hold, and the west has lots of easy-to-take territories.

I've seen the ads for it anda stuff, but I always assumed it was just a cheap knock-off of Risk with a LoTR cover slapped on top, but now maybe I'll buy it.

No, I refer to the Firstborn, who is ten. But yes, that's starting to happen. He nearly beat me at chess recently, and I was reallytrying. That's the real humiliation: when you're really trying and you still get humped. I suppose another thing to add is how things like the Strongholds and events add a bit of spice to things. You can turn the tide of battle by judicious placement of leaders, event cards and the like. Though again, it was a bit hard to work out how the hell the rules were all supposed to work and I missed out on getting a shed load of troops in Minas Tirith because I hadn't read them properly. Not that I'm bitter or anything. |

Firstly: Adventure cards, which give you special abilities like "gain 4 reinforcements in a territory if attacked; use once only" Secondly, leaders. They up your highest die by one. Thirdly, strongholds. They act as leaders when defending only. Finally, they added the Ring. This acts as a turn limiter. When the ring goes into Mount Doom, the game ends and the winner is determined by a points system. Or, if you're playing team RISK, that ends the game for Evil (of course, Evil can find the ring). I personally think LOTR RISK is awesome; so is Star Wars RISK, where they totally changed the neutral stance on balance of abilities.

I got this game a year or two ago at Christmas, but didn't play it until my 7-year old son dragged it out last weekend. We've now played two partial games, and I really like it.
Curubethion just outlined some of the main differences. Here are a few others: I don't think the value of card sets turned in increases as you go - that could be nice by preventing the wide swings at the end - you have to steadily build, which is more realistic. You attach over adjacent borders, as with regular Risk, but there are also some sea-lanes along the coast, by which you can attack - and you cannot cross a mountain range or a river with no bridge ('hard' boundaries, so to speak, I guess). All-in-all, I like it. I like the twist the leaders and strongholds add to the game. Haven't played it enough to get into the adventure cards, etc. Gaffer - don't feel too badly. I think things are tilted a little for the forces of evil. My son was creaming me the first game with them. I took the good a second time though, and by pursuing the right objectives, sort of pulled a 'reversal' and am starting to take over the board. We left it set-up in hopes that his little brothers won't destroy it.

I have LOTR risk and i'd say it totally owns, i have won as both sides but i've only played it about 4 times since i can very rarely get my friends to play risk, the new rules are confusing at first, but once you get used to them, its pretty awesome
