Aurora Borealis in Nebraska

I thought these were beautiful and I thought you all would appreciate them
There are some other pretty amazing photos on the site as well.

Those were beautiful pictures, Elvengirl. We've had some northern lights here as well, though it has been too cloudy for me to see them. I thought I might be able to catch a final glimpse of the lights before they're gone but no, they seem to have disappeared now. And it's still cloudy.

We've had plenty of northern lights but I've actually never seen them. Maybe next time when there's some extra solar activity...

It was probably the same night, but here in Saskatoon we had them. I had seen them myself once in Ontario (which doesn't happen often), but they were gorgeous, and go figure, I saw my first falling star as well...I love it!

Hey that's cool FF!
I remember I saw my first shooting star when visiting the Grand Canyon. Lucky for us it was a meter shower, so sleeping under the stars was extra special

I am glad you guys like the photos

I saw something similar once after a complete dunking in a vat of beer and an unfortunate knock to the head.

Just Kidding. It was a keg, not a vat.

All right all right......*gets serious........"the pictures are cooler than all that is cool concerning 'lights in the sky' and other 'lighty' phenomenon

Does anyone know what the furthest south the aurora borealis has ever been reported is? I figure I'll have to head north to see it.

I think last year or so, you could see them all the way down in Texas and North Africa. But that was due to extreme solar activity.

i haven't seen it here in helsinki, but "at home", further north in finland, i've seen them every year. some years it's just amazing; you can see them several nights and they're really bright.

thanks for those pics, elvengirl. makes me go all dreamy.

NOTE TO ALL SKY WATCHERS!

LEONID meteor shower peaks at ~130 AM EST on 17 November 2004 if you like that sort of thing. No storm activity levels expected but in truly dark sites rates are estimated to be 12 - 15 per hour with possible sporadic rates to 50-60 per hour! The encounter will spread over 3 days and is worth looking for if your weather cooperates. Check out Astronomy.com or SkyandTelescope.com or space.com for more info.

Don't forget the Orionids early December and Geminids mid-month and Ursids near Christmas!

Didn't see anything last Friday, but I read there has been another major solar flare. Maybe more aurora activity will be forthcoming.

Elvengirl, those photographs are stunning! The whole phenomenon of northern lights fascinates me - something about the polar magnetic energy which keeps the planet's rhythms and spinning schedule on point. Question - I'm wondering what equipment you used to snap these pictures; I have a Canon G6 dig camera and am still learning how to use it. Although, right now I live in L.A. and can't really travel for a while, so I doubt I'll be able to catch northern lights, but still, your shots are really impressive & I was just wondering what you used and how you took these shots. They are AMAZING.

I was clouded in Friday so didn't see any, but I do live in the mountains and so lighting is not usually a problem (yet).

So Elvengirl, is that you and your pics on Spaceweather.com? The cover photo for 5/19 is from Blair Nebraska and it looks like one that is on your site.

It looks like sunspot activity is tapering off.

Be on the lookout for aurora tonight!

This may be your chance to see the northern lights.
