Euro 2004

Here's a thread to discuss the wonderful football fest we'll be enjoying over the next month or so. Predictions, anyone?

Personally, it's hard to see past France, if they turn up. England will, I think, get an unpleasant surprise against Croatia and might not get past the group stage.

Prediction: England will get just far enough for everyone to think they're going to win, then they will lose.

That's all I know about football

I have to agree with sun-star. But I shall watch, all the same .... and am already flying my flag

(I saw a lovely quote from Frank Skinner (comedian) on Ceefax today (BBC teletext) - along the lines of that over here treason is still a capital offence. So ... if someone claims to have gone to bed with Beckham and thus ruins his game in a big tournament ... is there an argument that that person should be executed? )

I saw that too - I like the idea that the only national symbol against which anything counts as treason is actually David Beckham

I'm just a little bit envious ...

Any predictions for Eng v France?

Methinks they're going to rue the loss of Ferdinand and Southgate. 2-0 France.

I don't think they would get that far.

I also tihnk France will win England. I bet on 1-0, though... and I think Portugal will take the cup. Or France.

My bet: France 3, England 1

Winner: France. They aren't at their peak, but they're still pretty good, much as i loath to admit it.

I got woken up by the 3 Lions song this morning, v. cool.

Spain or Portugal are both possible winners, but they always seem to have bad luck in big tournaments. So unless their luck changes, I think France can win again. Though they haven't seemed that good lately.
Germany made it to the finals in the World Cup, but I doubt they can repeat that this year. But I don't know - the German women's team won both the World Cup and the European Cup (defeating Sweden in both finals, blah). So maybe die deutschen Frauen can inspire the men
Holland and the Czech Republic have good teams too. Would be fun to see one of them win.

However I'd love to see Sweden make it all the way. I also hope Denmark will do well. And England, because everyone here likes the English coach

I saw a TV programme this morning which was previewing the tournament. The interviewer was in Germany and was talking to two strapping ayrian teens and asked them in German whther they agreed that Germany had no chance in Euro 2004. The kid answered 'nein' and the subtitle read 'yes'. A joke, but indicative of the optimism with which us Englanders will have to watch this tournament...

Nah, Greece did very well in the qualifying round where they secured the top place, getting one point more than Spain that finished second. So if Greece can beat Spain, it's not surprising they can beat Portugal as well.
Greece will face Spain on June 16th. If they can repeat what they did in the qualifiers, maybe Greece can make it to the quarter finals.

Spain's win over Russia was easy to anticipate. There are a few good players in the Russian team but I don't see how they can stand a chance against Spain, Portugal and Greece.

Btw Gollum - Any reason you want Spain to win?

I saw on French news that the opening ceremony was the founding of the new world. I thought that was sort of odd - since as far as I know - there aren't any teams there from the western hemisphere and not all the countries involved in the games were a part of that. I figured they would have had something more inclusive of all of europe? [edit] On thinking on this - I guess they did it since the host country is Portugal - and therefore the voyage of Columbus is appropriate to be represented for the host country.

Side note - don't want to get into a political discussion and there are no political threads that can be started. Can someone tell me when each of the EU countries vote for their countries parlimentary representatives? I know some countries have already voted. I'm surprised they don't have it all on the same day.
