Year of the Monkey

Well, it's that time of year again-
the fireworks are cracking, the mahjong tiles are clacking, the lanterns are glowing, the rice wine is flowing-

Xin Nian Kwai Le!!

(Happy Chinese New Year!)

Just heading out to the mother-in-laws for the family gathering, so:

May the Year of the Monkey be a good one for all the Mooters.

Yes! Happy Chinese New Year! My calendar shows today (1-21 here) as the New Moon, but everything I've seen has tomorrow (1-22) for Chinese New Year. Is it the day after the New Moon? Or is it whenever it's the New Moon in the orient?

Second New Moon after Winter Solstice is how it's determined, right?

Year of Monkey... Year 4701 on the Chinese Calendar! Have you guys heard the story of how the 12 animals got their names on the years?

Well... OK! Here's the story as I heard it from my friend's father many years ago (I've editorialized a little):

All these animals were lined up on one side of a river - exactly how or by whom, or which river, I don't know - but we can guess it was about 4700 years ago. Anyway, they were to swim across, and their order of finish would determine the order of the years.

So... they're about to start off, and the rat looks around and says to himself, "Gee - I'm a small guy, and some of these others are BIG - and look like they'd be much stronger swimmers than me!" He notices the ox close at hand and figures the ox would be a pretty good swimmer, so he moves a little closer. Then, 1-2-3-Go! and the rat jumps up on the back of the ox, just as the race starts.

The animals jump into the water and start to swim. Sure enough, the ox pulls ahead of the field, making toward the other shore. As he starts to come up on the other side, the rat jumps off his shoulders, being the first to step on dry land.

So the order of finish goes: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, pig (the order doesn't make total sense to me, swimming-wise - but that's how the story goes).

Now the cat; the cat didn't want to swim across because he didn't like the water - but the cat saw what the rat did, and hated him for it. That's why the cat hates the rat even to this day!

Whichever year you were born determines which animal is your 'sign', so to speak. When those years come around again, it is considered 'your' year - so special ages are 12, 24, 36, 48, etc. Also, even if you're a rat, snake, pig, rooster or dog, don't sweat it. The Chinese have positive associations with each animal and see the good characteristics of each one.

Happy Chinese New Year, all.

The year of the Monkey.... what a perfect time to quote Pratchett and say 'Oook'.

Nice story, Valandil.

Huh. Only 4701... we're on 5764 years.

Nice story, indeed, Valandil.

I remember we used to celebrate the Chinese New Year in school. It was always cool - the older students would get a chinese dragon costume and go down the hall and in and out of all the classrooms. It was always a cool school day - right up there with Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Washington's Day.

Happy Chinese New Year everyone.

I heard somewhere that many people try to get their child born within a year of a dragon because of the good qualities they should get then.

I'm a rooster, life's little way of saying 'nanah nananah'.

I am a tiger...supposedly sensitive, creative, intelligent...well, people say I am, but I'm not sure. My sister is a monkey. Supposedly we aren't supposed to get along.

I love my year animal, because tigers rock.

My mom's a dragon, and so is my stepbrother...Eh...doesn't really fit.

My dad (the man who says he's so anti-conformist but is really just paranoid) is a sheep. Hehe.

In this place will I abide, and my heirs, unto the ending of the world.'

'Then Tuor arrayed himself in the hauberk, and set the helm upon his head, and he girt himself with the sword; black were sheath and belt with clasps of silver. Thus armed he went forth from Turgon's hall, and stood upon the high terraces of Taras in the red light of the sun. None were there to see him, as he gazed westward, gleaming in silver and gold, and he knew not that in that hour he appeared as one of the Mighty of the West, and fit to be father of the kings of the Kings of Men beyond the Sea, as it was indeed his doom to be; but in the taking of those arms a change came upon Tuor son of Huor, and his heart grew great within him. And as he stepped down from the doors the swans did him reverence, and plucking each a great feather from their wings they proffered them to him, laying their long necks upon the stone before his feet; and he took the seven feathers and set them in the crest of his helm, and straightway the swans arose and flew north in the sunset, and Tuor saw them no more.' -Of Tuor and his Coming to Gondolin

he's just fishing around. Obviously he hasn't caught anyone yet though.

If the line doesn't work on one person just try it on someone else until you get lucky.
