My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Anyone else seen this? For a film of its scale (a low-budget independent film released by IFC), it's amazing how popular its become. On the surface it seems like a generic romantic comedy, but that whole genre is really measured by how well the story pulled off even when the ending is predictable, and My Big Fat Greek Wedding is very enjoyable throughout. It's hilarious, but the humour is actually somewhat mature, and not the trashy cheap laughs you see so often nowadays.

Some of my friends have parents like that...

Actually, I very nearly have parents like that. But not quite.

The "apples and oranges" speech at the end really was quite clever, though. Heh.

I sooooo want to see that movie. I love funny culture clash stories. And it's alway more fun if there's a wedding involved.

i saw that movie with a bunch of friends and i loved it! it was really funny. of course all movies i see with my friends i like because we have so much fun seeing them... kind of like how hunger makes food taste better. but i liked the movie a lot. i love the independent film channel too. one of the nice things about it was taht whats-her-name wasnt, like, pretty like other people always are in movies and TV. That was refreshing. There is a Zorbas in a town right next to me. it's a great restraunt.

I went to see it a couple of weeks ago and thought it was really good and funny. I thought it was going to be one of those love films that is just like every other one. but it was different and that made it better

Greek Wedding only recently bumped out Road to Perdition as the 76th top grossing movies ever...which is ironic since Tom Hanks funded Greek Wedding and starred in Perdition.

I loved the movie... it was awesome!

Despite the fact that I quite liked the movie, I think making $200M is perhaps excessive...

I mean, it's not that special.

I beg to differ. Very seldom have I come away from a film with such a feeling of good humour. Although formulaic in some places, it completely surprised me in other respects. (Where was the "clash" between the two main characters? Backed by the latest schmaltzy ballad?) It was refreshing seeing something that didn't conform to standard Hollywood formula, or cast the latest Hollywood pretties.

Yes, the mere fact that it is indeed an independent project of Nia Vardalos' as well as the relative "obscurity" of its players lends the characters a certain ability to actually be characters, something missing with big-name machine-produced films. Yes, it explores an age-old issue with a lot of fresh - and very applicable and relevant - satirical humour.

Stylistically, though, in a cinematic sense, it's definitely closer to the mainstream... I suppose that lends it broad appeal.

I love that movie! I thought that it was hillarious. I have seen it 2 or 3 times now and I've really enjoyed the movie both times I saw it. Aunt Voula (sp?) was very funny. I also liked the grandma (what ever it was that they called her).

My mom really wanted to see it but never did so she bought it when it came out. It's so funny! What made it more hilarious was that they're just like my mom's side of the family. The way the grampa used Windex for everything , my papaw used to do that with something else(can't remember what though).
"He's a vegitarian" *silence* " You eat lamb!" or something like that. It's sooo much like my relatives.

anyway i really like that movie.

I haven't seen any of My Big Fat Greek Life, but it looks like it'd be alot like Everybody Loves Raymond except Greek.

A great movie. You can understand it better if you are Greek.I saw it with my parents...real fun,but it was a bit exaggerated, about the situations,I mean that Greek people in foreigh countries are such a 'close' community and all the others...

I saw it yesterday. I thought it was really cute. I kind of understand how it is. We have a family reunion every christmas and thanksgiving with just my mum's side of the family and we have like 15-17 people packed into grandma's tiny cottage. It's funny too cause my uncle and big brother love practical jokes.
But I really liked it.
Cheers,
Sam

I have a big happy Italian family too! I'm an eighth Italian, but I look full-blooded. My grandmother is the youngest of eleven, and my family is absolutely HUGE!
