Royal Wedding
Today the Crown Princess Victoria married her financee Daniel Westling in the Storkyrkan which lies in the very centre isle of Stockholm.
It was a beautiful ceremony. Magnificent gowns and uniforms worn by the Royal Family, the kings and queens of the European monarchies, various dignitaries. The cortege wound its way through the streets of the capital, the route were lined with members of various organisations and military units. The Stockholmers all joined in the festivities - thousands of cheering people gathered to congratulate the young royal couple. Marching band and musical corps played celebratory marches as the cortege passed en route towards the Royal Sloop. It carried the happy pair slowly and regally to the castle where the couple went ashore and up onto the balcony where they were cheered and heartily congratulated by the gathered Stockholmers. Magnificent music and songs were performed. It was a marvellous event and Im glad I was able to see it on TV. Last edited by Grey_Wolf : 06-19-2010 at 12:55 PM. |

What an atmosphere. Stockholm was a virtual sea of cheering people, happy faces all around. Apparently half a million people were out in the streets. I've never seen anything like it. I was lucky enough to get good glimpses of the newly wedded three times; in the cortège, on the sloop and on the balcony of the castle. I also managed to follow the televised wedding ceremony beforehand. I couldn't have planned the day better for my part

A pair of sunglasses protected my retinas from her brilliant smile and dazzling gown
Yeah, she was happy alright. Both of them were. A few decades ago it would have been inappropriate for royals to behave so affectionately in public

I watched them on web-TV. You were so lucky to actually be there - but the view was better on TV ...
Congratulations on having a new Prince! I was impressed with his speech - very good, and very, very moving. And I loved the way they were holding hands or touching each other's hands whenever they could. I also enjoyed the new song that was performed in church. "If only you could see the way you shine, darling, when you tell the world you're mine." So true! Quote:
In Sweden (unless I'm much mistaken) the monarch isn't even present at the Government meetings, after a change of legislation some years back.

Perhaps it's difficult for outsiders to understand the Scandinavian monarchies.. but the majority in Norway, Sweden and Denmark enjoy the ceremonial representation of their monarchs. It has nothing to do with equality, freedom or non-democracy. We elect our prime ministers, we elect our legislative assemblies, and they have all the power.
King Harald of Norway is the de jure head of state, he alone can declare war or peace, and he is commander of the armed forces, but his de facto power is nil since any display of power would be taken as, ironically, abuse of his position and the trust the people put in him as a ceremonial representative. We have our Kings and Queens because they provide a stable and, as of yet, positive head of state for our countries. I personally don't need a President. I vote every 4 years for my Prime Minister of choice, every 4 years for the Governor of my county, and I'm as free as any citizen of a Republic! Interestingly, some of the freest, most prosperous and most advances countries in the world are monarchies: Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, England, New Zealand, Japan ***P.S. I'd think this thread be merged into the Royalty-thread I created earlier***

I remember some time back in the 1960s, when King Harald was still Crown Prince, that someone in the Socialist Party said, "We want a Republic - and we want Harald for President!"

Almost all of the posts not related to the subject of the royal wedding have been removed, as will all further debate on outside topics, no more warnings given. I've already sent out numerous PMs on the subject and issued a public thread warning.
If you have any complaints on the action taken you may contact me via PM, but not through this thread. |
