Pleasure Models
If the technology becomes available to create bioroids( biological androids), like the replicants of Blade Runner. Would you be for, against, or neutral to the idea of pleasure models?
If against would you stand in the way of others who wanted them? |

I don't see why they would be problematic - with certain reservations. First of all, the development of "bioroids" in any case has to fall under one of two categories: either their human consciousness is developed to the same extent of rationality and sentience as ourselves, which would imply they should be treated as individuals with free will to the same extent as ordinary human beings; or alternatively, specifically for the purpose of servitude to human beings, as in under the Laws of Robotics, where their own existence is secondary to our own.
In the first case, we should find this reprehensible for the same reasons many of us find prostitution reprehensible: the question of preserving individual dignity. In the second case - which I personally favour - I don't think it's an issue, but it does mean that you have to specifically design androids with certain mental limitations; i.e. they should not be fully sentient. In the latter, nothing separates them from being hi-tech dildoes and blow-up dolls aside from their being more realistic in the superficial sense. Naturally, in either case, you need a framework for legal matters like property damage in the case that you're dealing with sadomasochists who suddenly think it's okay because they're not doing it to a live human being.

seeing how it worked out for the tyrell corporation, i'd have my reservations... i'm not much of a daryl hannah fan either, though sean young is kinda cute
i'm agree with IP on the general idea though... it all depends upon the sentience factor

On a personal level I see no problem with it. But after reading what IP had to say about property damage and sadomasochists I have my doubts on a psychological level. Suppose people like this would tend to get more violent, and then stay that way as the line between being real and being machine gets thinner.

I don't think this kind of technology will be with us for centuries. Even then, it's likely to be so expensive that it would be far easier to employ a human or "specialised" robot. Something that looks like a Telefunken U-47 with marital aids stuck all over it. (Don't forget Frank's morality tale of using machines for sexual gratification.)

A Replicant Showroom, circa 2050
Customer: "...well I'm almost convinced. Are there ANY drawbacks?" Salesman: "Well...there is a very small chance that some models MAY now and then show signs of hostility and slightly raised aggression levels." Customer: "How hostile and aggressive?" Salesman: "Well, as a for instance, one MIGHT, just occasionally, crush you head to the size of an orange with her bare hands." Customer: "Hmm, that IS a slight minus...but what the hell, I'll have a Marilyn Monroe 1960 model, a Kate Bush 1980, two Britney Spears 2003s and something sporty for the weekend...um...a Pamela Anderson 1998, say." Salesman: "And will you want the luxury upholstery version of the Pamela Anderson?" Customer: "Yep, I rather think so."
