33 people dead, that's terrible. If even a place of education can't be safe, just... damn.

Who does that?

My brain is incapable of understanding this tragedy, or even absorb what's going on.

I think that Alex Semonite (a 21-year-old political science major at Virginia) says it best, from the article:

"I can’t really think about myself, I can only think about how hard this is going to be for the families. I’m sitting here watching the death count rise, the number keeps going up. I’m in shock. I’m not afraid to walk out the door. This isn’t some militia campus full of guns or gangs. This is a nice place to be. This was an isolated incident."

This incident does not mean that college isn't safe. It means that someone at Virginia Tech was very unwell, and very violent. *hugs*

Location is irrelevant; people are unsafe.

Some of the students closed their classroom door and held it blocked shut with a table, risking the bullets by getting that close, and thus saving their class. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/talking_point/6561733.stm

I'm grateful for the presence of mind and courage that several students in the shootout showed.

HOLY Crap!

I've always kidded around that college is so much safer, because unlike high school no one wants to kill each other in college.

I cannot believe the body count, the guy must have been loaded down like rambo.

Yes, though my point was that places are still generally safe because most people are safe.

People like these folks is why we must continue to have faith in humanity. There was one gunner, and how many people who risked their lives to save their classmates?

Wow, that's a great story.

I'm still in shock over this whole thing. I thought living through 9-11 was history enough for this generation.

Was he bullied or a revengeful bf? Not that these are mitigating circumstances to go in and mow down 33 people. Absolutely horrid - another Bowling for the Columbine. Guns should be prohibited in the eductional facilities and ppl who enter campuses should be body-searched or x-rayed.

Okay.

I disagree, and even ignoring abortion, there are lots of other examples I could point to where huge collectives of people have together become ruthless killers. I don't view most people as "safe" at all. Quite the reverse.

I agree with you that most westerners aren't likely to snatch up a gun and shoot up a classroom. I don't find that an adequate definition of "safe," though, and neither do I think it applies to people in general, but I don't know if this is the place for that conversation.

I don't know how many people held the table.

The article doesn't mention their courage either, specifically, but just thinking about it logically, to hold the door shut with the table, they would have to get right up next to the door, and some of the bullets went through the door. They may have shielded themselves somewhat behind the table as well as the door, but with bullets going through the door, that's fairly ify protection.

If you'd like to debate human nature, or gun control, there's probably a thread for that.

Oh God... This is why I never watch the news or such.
I hope I will never fully understand how a person can get in such an emotional state that they start killing innocent people.

They were babies on 9/11, many of them. But generations can expect more than this...look at what the generation born in 1900 lived through.
