Hither Lands

I know that very little is known about the lands beyond middle earth and i was curious. What facts do we know about the Hither Lands? How far did Tolkien go into there description and history?

Ha! Or very little anyway.

Which 'hither lands' are you mostly interested in anyway? And at what time period? (since everything was re-shaped a few times as the ages passed)

Well, in Tolkien's words, that's a debatable and deserted land. Tolkien's histories don't cover it, because LOTR didn't take place anywhere near that area, and the Silmarillion was an Elvish history, and the elves didn't deal with that area either.

There's something in, I htink, the appendicies at the back of LOTR that talks about what the men got up to in the fourth age. It's short and vague but I seem to remember reading about how they sailed a lot, south unto the nether darkness or something (south pole). Long time ago so I don't remember it clearly but I think that's about it.
