2012 Olympic Games to London
You may have heard the news - the 2012 Olympic Games will be in London (England!).
There were some very interesting candidates for this one - besides London, other major entrants were Paris, New York City and Singapore. Congratulations to all the UKers - especially the Londoners! (or is it 'Londonians'? )

To be honest i think Britain is a pretty tacky place to hold the Games - even though i live here!
I think it would have been much grander in New York or Paris.

Maybe, but I'm sure the Londoners will be able to pull it off just as well as the Parisians and New Yorkers . Also London's suggestion for an Olympic stadium was by far the neatest, so I'm glad London won. Paris would have been better weatherwise though...
Btw Val, Singapore wasn't a candidate, it was the city where the International Olympic Committee held their vote . Moscow and Madrid were candidates though. Earlier (last year) Rio de Janeiro was a candidate too but they were voted down. Too bad, I wanted Rio to host the Games. Congratulations to London anyway!

Hopefully by 2012 I'll be living in London; can't wait to see the games...

Way to go Sebastion Coe! And good that they picked London because England chose to emphasize large scale urban renewal as a point of attraction for the IOC. Now in the past corrupt years doing that wouldnt have generated nearly as much importance as say free $3000 meals and free vacations for the judges kids but now the new committe members are focusing on the right things (it seems. although Im sure theres still some subtle corruption involved. its inevitable). Hopefully it will be a boom for England's neady and England's economy. It worked in Barcelona.
As for New York, they certainly werent ready for it. Some day. When people will actually let them build stadiums and what not. But not now. And hopefully they wont actually take their ball and go home like they are talking about now. Hopefully thats just disapointment talking. It would be a shame if they didnt reapply for another year.

London is awesome! I'm sure the weather will be fine. They have been having hot, dry summers recently. I went there about 4 years ago and the only time in rained in a month-long trip was when we went on the London Eye. (Naturally. )
Incidentally, while you're there avoid tourist traps at all costs! London is a neat city, but people visit certain areas (like around the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, etc) more than others. These are great places to see, but try not to buy lunch around there. What a neat place for the Olympics! Also nice to hear that there was no obvious corruption. That doesn't sound like much of a compliment, I know, but we are talking about the Olympics here. London rules!

New York City would have been a bad place for them. Really bad. Not the right facilities.
They tried to get that stadium built (the mayor) - but no one wanted it. If it were in NYC - a ton of the events wouldn't be in NYC - they would probably be in NJ :P
