I've a;ways been very glad to have been born in the west, the US in particular and the type of family I was born into.
I couldn't picture having to grow up in North Korea, China, Colombia, the middle east or africa, etc. Can't imagine what some of those people must go through everyday of their lives.

But there's always an "on the other hand." If you're an American born in the inner city areas of the bigger cities, or the trailer-park outskirts of smaller towns, life would be little different if you were from the "third world."

I would've liked to been born in England to see what it was like. It's not a "western" country, I believe. Or am I somehow wrong?

Almost, perfect. We lived in the projects. Mom and grandma had degrees in social work so we basically lived with the people they were helping out.
I say this "PO" in American aint like PO in other places. In the ghetto people have TV's, VCR's, DVD players, stereoes, cars, cable, RUNNING WATER, HEAT, ACCESS TO EDUCATION, CLOTHES, FOOD, ETC... people in the should be happy as hell they weren't born in Africa as it is today. Sorry Huan, but I grew up in the ghetto and I have been to some 3rd countries. Poor people in American live quite well. Yes there are destitute people in America but that is a SMALL minority. My girlfriend is from Thailand. I just came back from her village where her family stays. THAT is poor. They cook with wood and charcoal. No stove. Outhouse bathroom and shower. The corner "store" for lack of a word is were the villiage phone is. They( the store) keep their "cold" goods in a in an ancient fridge. The kids in her familiy had NEVER been to a cinema, NEVER been to a mall had NEVER gone to Pizzia hut. The people there sleep on the floor. I mean REAL floor as in the concrete foundation. Hell that's pretty good because many in the villiage have wooden shacks. I need to disenage

Damn right I'm glad to be born in the west
If, for example, I lost everything and couldn't work then in the UK I'd: Have housing given to me and the rent/mortgage and water bills paid for. Be given enough money to live on. Receive free healthcare/optician/dentist inc. perscription costs. Receive free education (I already have my University fees paid for, managed to wrangle that one ) If I had a family then I would receive money on a weekly basis...I think it is something like £20/child.......my kids would also receive free lunches at school. When I could return to work I would have all clothing and travel costs paid for me to attend interviews etc. When I am 65 I will receive a state pension and £400 a year towards heating costs....oh and a pass for public transport. If I were disabled then the government pays to have my house renovated (stairlifts, accessways etc) and I would receive a car (fully paid for) even if I couldn't drive then my next of kin get the car, so long as I have complete access to it I worry about a few things in life.....but at least in the UK Starving, hypothermia and lack of health care are not some of them . Hell, it doesn't even cost me a penny to have my pets seen to by the vet |

What's wrong with Japan AE, always seems (from afar) an interesting place to me?
My two main criteria: 1) Brews good beer: UK, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic 2) Plays rugby league to Test level UK, New Zealand, France, Australia, Papua New Guinea Combining the two means I'll stick with the UK for now. Mind you, watching Carcasonne play at home with a bottle of red wine is tempting, so France is coming up on the rails! But seriously, I suppose that (barring things being truly terrible) there's a natural tendency to think that this time and this place are best, isn't there? We'd all be miserable as sin if we didn't.

It's because the Western countries are closer to the Undying Lands . . .
