BC had a program like that. Our minimum wage is $8/hour, but you could pay an inexperienced youth (someone with less than 100 hours job experience) $6/hour.

It pisses me off then and it pisses me off now. There are enough barriers to youth already without allowing employers to pay them less than minimum wage based solely on experience.

If that's what's going on in France it's only going to add to pissed off young people.

No, but it is here! The principal announced that the school wouldn't tolerate kids out of class protesting, but there would be a discussion set up in the gym after school. The majority of kids protested anyway, so she called the riot squad to my school when some Mexicans, et. al., protested, who I'm sure didn't think of any details and just "rioted" to get out of going to class. Go principal! My Digital Art teacher marked them all truant. Go Mr. Williams! I remember another teacher who did the same the LAST time they took something similar personal--it was the driver's liscense thing. Why do so many supposedly legal Hispanic immigrants take it so personal? It's against ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS, and unless that includes every one of them, it shouldn't be so widely protested. Did any other racial groups, including illegals, (Palm Desert has a substantially large illegal Swedish population, according to my Digi. Art Teacher) make a big deal? NO! In fact, I'm disgusted because they took it as yet another chance to bash whities as many of us in such "ghetto" neighborhoods have unnaffectionately become known as. I hate to sound racist, Mexicans are so COOL! Until they move to America and drink bud light and start joining gangs, that is. It's the damn youth! I will no longer associate myself as a kid or a teen because that generalizes me with a bunch of ghetto rapping gangsta idiots (white, black, asian, hispanic alike!). Where has the world gone?
I hate to sound racist like this, because I'm not, but when you have these inauthentic wannabe gang members destroying your neighborhood (particularly your own house because a) you are white and b) you live right between two groups who considerthemselves using "friendly competition"), it really makes you angry.
Anyway, back to France...I haven't heard much of it.

This comment not directed at any particular Mooter.

Well no country is free from rioting. I mean, you can't just say, look France has a history of rioting, and now there's a riot. The corollary of that would be countries without riots right now do not have a history of rioting, and that's simply not true. Canada has had its share of riots (Apex summit, our 1 day civil war) but we don't happen to have any right now. (yay )

There are far more complex social factors at work in France right now than simply that there were riots before and their independance was rather violent.

The problem here is not that inexperienced people are getting paid less (which makes sense), but that that they are being paid less than minimum wage.

The minimum wage is a law and should apply to all workers. That's my problem with the issue. If the minimum wage was lowered to $6/hour it would be a different matter.

Isn't it considered "entry level" pay when you come in without experience and then after a period you qualify as min. wage person?

My last post was a cross-post with you there Spock.

It may be as you described, but IMO this is utter rubbish. Minimum wage is a law. Classifying someone as "entry-level" is clearly a thinly disguised method of circumventing minimum wage laws.

exactly right, Nurvingiel

having "youth wages" in addition to "minimum wages" effectively nullifies the latter.... if minimum wage is 8/hr and youth or entry-level wage is 6/hr then what you have is an effective minimum wage of 6/hr, not 8/hr... it's simply a back door to lower the minimum wage, is all

No worries Spock.

So is this what's going on in France as well? It's a problem for all youth but it would certainly contribute to the rioting problems.

Indeed, but for some reason its not getting half the publicity it did last year.

Isn't that weird? I don't see why it doesn't: it has all the elements of slam-dunk headlining...

The more you pay attention to them, the more cause you give them to make noise. Admitedly France is a racist, snobby country, but I really dont think that they are improving their case by acting like the savages the french think they are.

Well, there's really no THINK to it. If burning cars and busses isn't savage, I don't know what is. Yeah, France is a snob country, but I don't see why that is sufficient reason for anyone to be violent against them at this level; there's obviously more working here than people just reacting to what they deem "unfair". Or maybe not...

My theory as to why us in the U.S aren't hearing about it much is because we have the little old election goin on and all resources are being put towards election propaganda in a couple weeks maybe we'll start hearing about it.
