So, back to the topic then... which was: why we all thought Galadriel was the most impressive female character in ME
I think these quotes may have something to do with it:

Quote:
Her mother name was Nerwen mand-maiden...a match for both the loremasters and atheletes in the days of their youths...
-The Shibboleth of Feanor (HoME 12)

Quote:
Galadriel was the greatest of the Noldor, except Feanor maybe
-The Shibboleth of Feanor (HoME 12)

And that includes Finwe, Fingolfin, Finarfin, Fingon, Maedhros et al.

Bu then again, Luthien is described as being the greatest of the Eldar.

Galadriel denied the One Ring. That proves immortal (not immortal, but not human) and impressive strength.

To reiterate what I said a couple pages ago, Galadriel is not only very powerful, but also perceptive. She can relate to people no matter what race, rank or whatever they are. She wisely chose each gift she gave to the fellowship when they came to Lothlorien, and she also supported Gandalf to be the leader of the Istari long before Saruman was evil or anything.

She sees a lot that others cannot.

I think Eowyn is most impressive because she had the guts to disguise herself in armour and defend her city, yet remain feminine and marry Faramir. She rules!

Okay, Galadriel rules too. I love the enchanting aura that surrounds her and her wisdom that surpasses most, if not all. Her strength to resist the ring makes her a hero in my book.
She is living proof that girls rule: did you see the "strength" in Boromir, noooo. He fell under the temptation of the ring, but Galadreil, a woman, did not. So next time a guy tells you that girls are weaker than guys, bring up Galadreil and Eowyn and make them eat their words!

I noticed you wrote more about Galadriel. I think you secretly think she is the most impressive!

Very impressive, but this isn't just about brawn and guts (which Eowyn tops everyone in Middle-earth). Galadriel is more well rounded in the impressive aspect area.

I'd say Galadriel and Eowyn are both very impressive.
But Galadriel was more subtle and she took the stitches out more in the background. Only a few people knew her real strenght and importance.
Eowyn's strenght was more open, she showed the whole world her abilities.

So each of these impressive women had her own way to change the fate of the world.

Eowyn did disguise herself though. If Galadriel was going to go to war, she'd just go as is. However, I can understand Eowyn's reasons for disguising herself - she had enough to deal with without getting hassled.

Pardon me for jumping into conversation, but I just read this bit where Sam is giving a description of Galadriel to Faramir, and it is so good I want to quote it here:
Quote:
But I wish I could make a song about her. Beautiful she is, sir! Lovely! Sometimes like a great tree in flower, sometimes like a white daffadowndilly, small and slender like. Hard as di'monds, soft as moonlight. Warm as sunlight, cold as frost in the stars. Proud and far-off as a snow-mountain, and as merry as any lass I ever saw with daisies in her hair in springtime. But that's a lot o' nonsense, and all wide of my mark.
`Then she must be lovely indeed,' said Faramir. `Perilously fair.'
`I don't know about perilous,' said Sam. `It strikes me that folk takes their peril with them into Lórien, and finds it there because they've brought it. But perhaps you could call her perilous, because she's so strong in herself. You, you could dash yourself to pieces on her, like a ship on a rock; or drownd yourself, like a hobbit in a river. But neither rock nor river would be to blame.'

Thanks Artanis! Sam and Galadriel are my favourite characters! That's a great quote.

I think that women like Luthien, Galadriel and Arwen are all pretty much impressive, but I find Éowyn the most impressive of them all.
I mean, not only did she dress as a soldier and slay the Witch-king, but she also understood that she was in love with Faramir at the end. And they make such a wonderful couple!
A good thing Tolkien didn't let Éowyn marry Aragorn.

Well, Lalaith, I have had more time to make all these posts. So you rock!

Jonathan, though I agree that Eowyn, recognizing her love for Faramir and marrying him etc. doesn't make her impressive. Slaying the Witch-King and being tough when she saw her beloved uncle dwindling under the influence of Saruman makes her impressive. That's why Galadriel is more impressive.

Yes, I know she doesn't get impressive by marrying Faramir, but the marriage made me like her even more.

Yes I know, that's why I mentioned it. Tolkien had it in mind to let Éowyn marry Aragorn. I'm glad that he didn't let it happen.
