Almost forgot to mention. If you classify a female character by her ability to open a can of "whoop ass" as being impressive, then Eowyn would be your choice. But I'm saying that it takes more than physical strength and battle hardness to be impressive. Galadriel doesn't take any crap from anyone. But she doesn't open a physical can of "whoop ass" on anyone to get what she wants. Whereas, Eowyn had to disguise herself as a man to go into battle with the Rohirim, because she was told to stay home with the other women. Galadriel does as she pleases when she pleases and no man tells her what to do, not even Celeborn. No comparison here.

Btw, Galadriel did fight in the Kinslaying against the Noldor defending her mother's kin.

Still, my vote is still going to Galadriel, for various already said reasons. |

galadriel was a wise elf, but i have yet to hear an argument better than that of luthien. what did galadriel do that can even begin to compare to luthien's life?
i think eowyn showed more raw courage in the face of adversity that galadriel. im not saying that galadriel was not impressive, just not as impressive as luthien.

Must go read about Luthien again. In the mean time, my vote goes to Eowyn and Galadriel. Everyone's already listed my reasons so I won't go there.

Whereas, all that Galadriel did, she did out of justice, riteousness and the love of ME and the people that dwelt there. She had everything to lose and nothing more to gain than she already had. Even when the Valar gave her permission to return to Valinor, she turned them down because she felt ME needed her. On the whole, unselfish reasons and therefore, this makes her the most impressive female character of ME. Eowyn went into battle to glorify herself in battle. I never got the impression that she felt that she was actually needed to overthrow Sauron. Just looking for glory. Not to say that killing the Nazgul Witch King is anything to turn your nose up at, just saying that it pales in comparison to all that Galadriel did for ME. |

I wouldn't say for glory so much as for honour; the honour of life (and possibly death) as a shield-maiden. Somehow, Eowyn seems nobler to me than the glory-seeking bloodthirsty types.

I'd say we better split this up to races. You can't compare a Vala to a Maia as well as you can't really compare a men to an elf.
So here is my list (now, when I read the books again I could easily change my opinion again). 1. Men Eowyn 2. Elves Luthien 3. Valar Varda (or Yavanna) 4. Maiar Melian 5. Hobbits Can't really name a very impressive female Hobbit. 6. Dwarves I only know one dwarve woman Did I forget any important race? (No I won't list spiders like Ungolianth or She-lob.)

I made a little mistake.
Here is the corrected list: 1. Men Eowyn 2. Elves Galadriel 3. Valar Varda (or Yavanna) 4. Maiar Melian 5. Hobbits Can't really name a very impressive female Hobbit. 6. Dwarves I only know one dwarve woman 7. Half elf/Half Maia Luthien

Impressive hobbits lass: Lobelia Sackville-Baggins. She stood up to Sharkey's men, with her umbrella, by herself, and there were two of them, and she was thrown in the Lockholes, even though she's very old, and when she was freed, she tottered out on her own two feet! Lobelia iz cool!

Really, how could you compare Lobelia Sackville-Baggins with Varda (Elbereth, Lady of the Stars), or Galadriel, or even Eowyn ("she who opened a can of whoop ass on the Nazgul witch king"). Really. |

Tis true. But Galadriel, Luthien, and Eowyn give each other fair competition. They've been the big three pretty much since the thread started.

And the reason why I made a own categorie for Luthien is, that she had special abilities and that's why you can't really compare her to anyone.

Already everyone knows I feel that Galadriel was the most impressive because of her wisdom and unselfish acts (even staying in ME after she was allowed to return to Valinor, b/c she knew she could help ME still). We will all have our favorites and there would be nothing to sway anyone from his/her choice at this point. |

while all that you said is nice, luthien is by far the greatest of all the eldar. TOLKIEN SAID SO. here let me give you the quote:
quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Who together with the greatest of all the Eldar, LĂșthien TinĂșviel, daughter of Elu Thingol, are the chief matter of the legends and histories of the Elves. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i earlier stated that this quote was from letter, but i was mistaken. its from volume XII of The History of Middle-earth. luthien faced down morgoth and sauron, for love. nothing galadriel ever did could ever compare to that. i would imagine Tolkien thought the same, he put luthien's name on his wifes grave, not galadriels. not only is luthien the greatest(most impressive) of the females, she is the greatest of ALL the eldar, including but not limited to: feanor, finrod, fingolfin, galadriel, thingol etc.
